“State Senator Augustus Benton (Ben) Chafin, Jr., who was a native son of Russell County located in Southwest Virginia, died on January 1, 2021, from Covid complications,” the statement said.

The sen. represented southwest Virginia and was also from Russell County. As a republican, Ben was first elected to the House of Delegates in 2013 and then went to the state Senate in 2014.

As it was confirmed, lawmakers and others in political circles had heard the news about sen. Chafin contracting the COVID in mid-December when he was hospitalized at VCU.

While other Virginia administrators have contracted coronavirus since the start of the pandemic, Chafin is the first to die from complications.

Administrators from around the state grieved Chafin’s death late Friday. In honor of the sen., Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam commanded the state flag atop Virginia’s Capitol to fly at half-staff until Chafin’s internment.

Gov. Ralph Northam noted, “I knew Ben as a lawmaker, a lawyer, a banker, and a farmer who was raising beef cattle in Moccasin Valley, running the land just as generations of his family had done before him. He enjoyed the outdoors, and he loved helping people even more.”

“He served to ensure that his region and community, and the people he loved, would never be forgotten,” Senate Republicans said in a statement. Chafin is the first Virginia lawmaker to die from the virus.

Senator Chafin, who represented parts of the NRV and far Southwest, becomes the first member of the General Assembly to die from coronavirus.

The Republican administrator’s family thanked the VCU Medical Center in Richmond for its hardy care and heartfelt support throughout his two weeks of medical services there.

Chafin’s office remembered him Friday as a great supporter of the Second Amendment, economic development, and health care coverage for thousands of low-income Virginians.

“He promoted jobs in his district, especially in the coalfields where the decline of coal has wasted local economies,” the statement noted.

Gov. Ralph added, “This is tragic news to start a new year with the loss of a kind and gracious man. May we all recommit to taking further steps to care for one another.” Ben Chafin is survived by his mother, sister, wife, three children, and grandchildren.

There have been more US attorney deaths this week, including the Pa. gov.’s death. Richard Dick Thornburgh’s obituary is reviewing the gov. ‘s honors after he died since he was one of the governors who served as US attorney general under two presidents.

More COVID Victims Including Luke Letlow’ Death

The sen., who was a cattle farmer and attorney, served Virginia’s 38th District. Ben was elected to the state’s House of Delegates in 2013 before moving to the Senate in 2014.

The news of Ben Chafin’s obituary comes just days after Louisiana Rep.-elect Luke Letlow passed away of coronavirus complications at the age of 41. He was slated to succeed retiring Rep. Ralph Abraham, whom he served earlier as chief of staff.

Letlow was first admitted to St. Francis Medical Center following complications from the COVID on December 19 before he was transferred to the Ochsner LSU Health ICU on December 23. He suffered a heart attack after a procedure related to the virus.

MF Doom’s death cause was also announced as it relates to a suicide attempt after his family confirmed in a statement that the rapper passed away at the age of 49. However, no official cause of death has not been revealed.

According to the statement from Chafin’s office, the family, at the sen.’s request, will not hold a formal funeral service and request that in lieu of flowers and other acts of kindness to make food bank donations in his memory to the Elk Garden School Community Ministry at 52 Hayters Gap Road, Rosedale, Va., 24280.”
