A federal jury found R&B singer guilty on Monday, September 27, 2021. R Kelly’s racketeering sentence is on charges; he sexually assaulted women and girls for several years.

The singer, whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, faces ten years up to life in prison for the convictions.

On Monday, his attorney, Deverau Cannick, told reporters that his client did not expect to be sentenced, saying: “You didn’t get to see what we saw in terms of the discovery. You didn’t get to see all the inconsistencies. We said in our summation that the government cherry-picked their version that they thought would support the continuation of the narrative.”

The rapper did not have any reaction to the sentence when it was read in court because he was not expecting this verdict.

The verdict came a few weeks after the trial opened in NYC. He also faced charges in Chicago, but both processes had been delayed by the Covid19 pandemic.

Rapper Sentenced to R. Kelly Racketeering

R Kelly’s racketeering sentence includes separate charges of sex trafficking, including the panel of seven men and five women that convicted him on nine counts, one count of racketeering, which included 12 underlying acts of bribery and sexual exploitation of children, kidnapping, bribery, and sex trafficking.

Acting US Attorney Jacquelyn Kasulis appreciated the court’s decision. She said: “Today’s guilty verdict forever brands R. Kelly as a predatory, who used his fame and fortune to prey on the young, the vulnerable, and the voiceless for his own sexual gratification.”

Prosecutors asked many of the victims to witness during the trial, and Kasulis said she applauded their bravery in sharing “the painful, intimate, and horrific details” of their lives in open court, adding that no one deserves what they experienced at Kelly’s hands and the threats and stress they faced in talking about what happened to them.

Rapper R Kelly’s Racketeering Sentence Details: Who are the Victims?

Fifty prosecution and defense witnesses came forward during the five-week trial since August 18, including victims who were identified as “Jane Does.” There were 45 pursuit witnesses. Jane Doe 1 was the singer Aaliyah, who passed away in 2001.

On September 9, a former radio intern who identified herself as Sonja testified that the singer invited her to travel to Chicago in 2003 to interview him at his studio. She said she was 21 at that time. When she arrived, a person put her in a room that quickly “locked from the outside.”

Sonja stated that she lost consciousness after eating her first meal, and the rapper had adjusted his pants. She believed that he sexually assaulted her when she was unconscious. Sonja said: “There was something in me that wasn’t wanted.”

The 13-count indictment released in July 2019 in the Northern District of Illinois accusing Kelly of videotaping himself having sex with at least four underage girls in 1998. A few years later, Kelly found that some of the videos were missing from his “collection.” It is reported that he paid “hundreds of thousands of dollars” to recover them.

That indictment was followed by another one from a Cook County grand jury a few months later on 11 counts differing from complicated criminal sexual assault to aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office in Minnesota announced that R. Kelly was charged with two counts of prostitution with a person under 18 back in August 2019. A woman revealed that the incident happened in 2001 when she was 17.
