What’s Maple Leafs Defenceman Börje Salming’s Cause of Death?

Share

We are greatly saddened to announce to you that on November 24, 2022, we lost a legendary ice hockey defenceman at the age of 71. Börje Salming’s cause of death has been followed by many questions. May he rest in peace.

He started to play for Brynäs IF when he was old enough, and so obviously good enough, to leave Kiruna. After a while, he decided to return to Sweden after his NHL career and played two seasons with AIK. Brynäs held a particular game for Börje a week ago, and the Toronto Maple Leafs sent a representative.

Börje joined the Toronto Maple Leafs 50 years ago and will forever be considered a part of the hockey family.

Salming was born on April 17, 1951, in Kiruna, Sweden. He spent his childhood in Kiruna, in the far north of Sweden. Börje and his older brother Stig were raised by their mother Karin (Persson) Salming as their father passed away in a mine accident.

The interesting is that Salming’s career with the Maple Leafs made a massive change in NHL hockey forever which the story of Börje’s signing by the Maple Leafs and arrival in Toronto is well told and became one of the most remarkable NHL stories.

He remains the all-time leader in goals and points by a Maple Leaf defender, and is second only to Tim Horton in penalty minutes, over 30 years after he last played a game for the Leafs.

Salming had 150 goals and 787 points over 1,148 career NHL games with the Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings. He was a First Team All-Star and five-time Second Team All-Star in the NHL. He had a fruitful career and here are some of his achievements:

  • 17-seasons in the NHL
  • Most career points by a Leafs defenceman
  • Most career goals by a Leafs defenceman
  • Most career assists by a Leafs player
  • Hall of Famer
  • Trailblazer

A few days ago, Salming visited the HHOF induction weekend and surprised his fans. For one last time, people had a chance to cheer him and be impressed anew at his spirit, his toughness, and his perseverance. He was truly a legend, a Maple Leaf and we will never forget what he gave to us.
