Rider Callie Witt’s Tragic Death Happens at Young Age


Callie Witt, a 20-year-old exercise rider from Nebraska, passed away Friday morning April 29, 2022. Callie Witt’s cause of death was related to his accident on the Keeneland training track in Lexington, Kentucky.

According to the latest reports, the exercise rider for trainer Joe Sharp was thrown from a horse shortly after 8 a.m. Alpha Event Medicine, the medical team, immediately attended to Callie.

Lexington Fire and Emergency immediately arrived at the scene within six minutes and transported Callie to the University of Kentucky Emergency Department, where Callie was pronounced dead from blunt force injuries.

“We are heartbroken by this tragic loss. Our hearts and prayers go out to Callie’s family, friends, and our collective racing community at this difficult time,” Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin said.

Callie Witt’s Cause of Death after Accident

Callie Witt’s cause of death was confirmed after his tragic death at the young age of 20. Keeneland released a statement Friday morning and shared the details of the accident.

Sharp said the tragic accident occurred when the 3-year-old horse that Witt was riding “did a kind of side-step in mid-gallop and fish-tailed,” throwing the Callie into a concrete section underneath a railing. Keeneland said the track’s medical team was on the scene within six minutes.

Kentucky state Rep. Andy Barr took to Twitter to pay touching tribute to the late player. This is a devastating tragedy that no family should ever have to endure. Please join me in praying for the family and friends of Callie Witt,” Barr said.

Callie Witt's Death Cause has been Revealed

The president of BCTC, Dr. Koffi Akakpo, shared the following statement: “We learned this morning our student Callie Witt passed away due to a tragic accident. Today, while working for trainer Joe Sharp at Keeneland, she was thrown from a horse.

“Callie was an experienced rider who had been working for Sharp for almost a year. She was due to graduate in August 2022. Our hearts go out to Callie’s family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them at this very sad time,” Akakpo wrote.

The young rider graduated from the North American Riding Academy based at the Thoroughbred Training Center in Lexington. He had aspired to eventually ride races and was enrolled in a local community college.

Just two years ago, Callie was a state high-school wrestling champion in her native Nebraska. Callie was studying at Bluegrass Community and Technical College.

Alicia Hughes tweeted: “Full release from Keeneland on the absolutely devastating news of the loss of exercise rider Callie Witt this morning. Condolences to her friends, family, and all who knew her.”

“I did not know her but rest in paradise Callie Witt. You were beautiful on a horse and it was an honor to photograph you,” Jamie Martinez wrote on Twitter.
