Long-Term Disease Turned As Cathal Coughlan’s Cause of Death


With the most profound sorrow, we have to inform you about Mr. Coughlan’s passing. The heartbreaking news was announced on May 23, 2022. According to a statement from the 61-year-old’s family, Cathal Coughlan’s cause of death was due to a long-term illness.

Born as an Irish singer-songwriter, Cathal Coughlan’s project with both bands gained much critical acclaim, as did his solo material. The legend followed his passion for singing in the late 1970s.

The hard-working musician took experiences by using a variety of musical styles, neo-classical, folk, and industrial rock, to name a few.

He formed Microdisney in 1980 along with Sean O’Hagan, little after they met for the first time. His lyrics focus on:

  • politics,
  • the seamy side of relationships,
  • the interplay between the two,
  • utilizing surreal imagery and literary and historical references.

He completed six albums, the last being 2021’s Song Of Co-Aklan as a solo musician. Most of these featured a line-up known as Grand Necropolitan. It features:

He was involved for a time, in musical theatre, mainly in France. The Irish Times described the musician as the ‘genius of Irish rock’ back in 2016.

He was the subject of the documentary ‘The Adventures of Flannery’ which had screenings in Cork, Belfast, Dublin, and further afield.

World Mourns After Cathal Coughlan’s Cause of Death Comes Out

So sad to hear of the passing of Mr. Coughlan who left an amazing musical legacy. It’s said that he passed away on May 18. He slipped away peacefully in hospital after a long illness.

Song of Co-Aklan, his most recent solo album, was released in 2021. The album contains contributions from many of the musicians he had worked with over the previous forty years, including Microdisney cohort Sean O’Hagan.

Also, for their classic 1985 album, The Clock Comes Down The Stairs, Microdisney earned the inaugural IMRO NCH Trailblazer Award. It celebrates seminal albums by iconic Irish musicians.

Tim’s Listening Party announced: “One of the greatest honors of working on The @LlSTENlNG_PARTY is to be able to share time with some of our heroes. Cathal Coughlan was certainly one of those. Rest easy man x x You’re a genius, you’re a giant.”

A fan wrote: “A sad day for Irish music, culture and writing with the death of Cathal Coughlan far too soon and of the death of the trailblazing Dervla Murphy. They leave behind a legacy of music and adventure.”

Tony Clayton-Lea wrote in shock: “Ah, boy… This is just the worst news… ‘Cathal Coughlan passed away on 18th May 2022. He slipped away peacefully in hospital after a long illness. He was 61.”

One tweeted: “I was brought up in Glounthane Co Cork. Lived near Cathal Coughlan. His mum taught me in primary school. He may have fancied my sister. He remembered her name with a wry smile the last time we spoke. Devastated to hear of his passing. An artist apart.”

A fan commented: “Cathal Coughlan has died; died, not passed away, as he wouldn’t stand for euphemistic bullshit: he was the truth. He was an extraordinary singer, lyricist, and composer; he was also one of the most beautiful human beings I’ve ever met. Adieu l’ami.”
