What Led to Dream Theater’s Charlie Dominici’s Death?

While many fans are searching for Charlie Dominici’s cause of death, Mike Portnoy confirmed Dominici’s death on November 17, 2023.

Mike Portnoy wrote on X: “We are devastated to hear the news of the passing of former Dream Theater singer, Charlie Dominici. Charlie was the voice of DT on our debut album, ‘When Dream And Day Unite’, recorded back in 1988.

“Beyond being a great singer, he was an incredibly talented songwriter, a well-rounded musician on both guitar and keyboards, and a long-time friend even after his departure from the band.

Charlie Dominici's cause of death has not been announced at this time. The news of Charlie's death was broken by Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy.

“Charlie’s unexpected passing is a tremendous loss to everyone in the Dream Theater family, and we wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the Dominici family during this immensely difficult time.”

Charlie Dominici was born on June 16, 1951, in Brooklyn, New York, U.S. He soon after moved with his family to the Five Towns region in Nassau County, Long Island.

Professionally, Dominici came into prominence as a member of Franke and the Knockouts, in which Dominici played guitar and sang backing vocals.

Charlie auditioned for Dream Theater in 1987 and was then was hired for the job in November of that year.

He was best known as the second vocalist for the progressive metal band Dream Theater, having replaced Chris Collins and later being replaced by James LaBrie.

Most recently, the singer has fronted his own self-named progressive metal band, which has released three albums. Dominici performed on the band’s debut album, 1989’s When Dream and Day Unite.

What’s Charlie Dominici’s Cause of Death at 77?

Charlie Dominici’s cause of death has not been announced at this time. The news of Charlie’s death was broken by Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy.

Portnoy took to his social media earlier today (Friday, November 17) to share a few pictures of Dream Theater with Charlie, and he included the following message

Charlie Dominici's cause of death has not been announced at this time.

Dominici remained in contact with Dream Theater throughout their career. Meanwhile, he obtained a job as a finance manager in the automobile business.

He was hired by Mike Portnoy to sing at his wedding to Marlene Apuzzo. He worked on an album with his brother, guitarist Kane Daily, that never saw the light of day.

In 2003, Dominici released a song on his website titled “Now the Time Has Come“. Charlie’s voice was heard on the YtseJam Records release “When Dream and Day Unite Demos.

On March 6, 2004, he joined his former bandmates onstage in Los Angeles for the first time in 15 years for a unique performance celebrating the 15th anniversary of the band’s first album, singing on “To Live Forever” and “Metropolis” along with LaBrie and keyboardist Derek Sherinian.

This performance was released as “When Dream and Day Reunite“, the DVD version which features footage from the band’s 1989 tour with Dominici.

He opened for Dream Theater at three shows on their Chaos in Motion Tour in June 2007.
