Bob Huggins’ Dad Charlie Huggins’ cause of death was not released after sources announced that Hoops legend passed away this morning (April 20) at the age of 87. RIP.
Graduating from Morgantown High School as an All-State basketball player, Charlie Huggins accepted a basketball scholarship at West Virginia University. “Forgetting to study,” Huggins had to put his basketball career on hold. He began working at Sterling Faucett in Morgantown and continued to play independent basketball.
As an Ohio high school coach, Charlie Huggins had a record that rivaled that of legendary Middletown High School coach Paul Walker.

Charlie Huggins was the perfect addition to the 1955-56 team, and he and Joe Miller led the team to a 22-12 season and its second trip to the NAIA Tournament in Kansas City. His 1956-57 team made it to the WVIAC Tournament finals but lost to West Liberty, and Charlie was named to the Second All-Conference Team.

A Twitter account said: “Charlie Huggins, who led the Strasburg Tigers to a Class A State Title in 1967 and IV South to 2 State Titles in ’72 and ’76, passed away this morning at the age of 87. He amassed a 398-74 record during his 20 yr career. God Speed!”
During 20 years of coaching, Charlie’s teams had a record of 398-74. They won:
- Eight league championships
- 15 sectionals
- 10 districts
- Seven regionals
The Eastern Ohio Basketball Camp he conducted from 1969-2010 was respected and well-known.
Before becoming a coach, Huggins was an outstanding high school player in West Virginia, earning all-state recognition. He once made 16 consecutive free throws in a state tournament game. He also led Alderson-Broaddus College to the NAIA Tournament.
