Her nephew, actor Sid Lucero, confirmed the tragic death news. Actress-talent manager Annabelle Rama also first announced the news on Facebook, writing, “CHERIE GIL JUST PASSED AWAY AT 5 PM TODAY PLEASE PRAY FOR HER.”
She and her parents Eddie Mesa and Rosemarie Gil, and brothers Mark Gil (+) and Michael de Mesa, Cherie played in a showbiz clan and had an early beginning in entertainment; after that she received supporting roles in different movies before bagging the main role at the age of 15 in the film Problem Child, starring opposite her mother.
Beloved Cherie additionally starred in films including Manila by Night in 1980, Oro, Plata, Mata in 1982, and as Lavinia Arguelles in Bituing Walang Singing in 1985, the film where the actress spoke the now-iconic line “you’re nothing but a second-rate, trying hard copycat!”
She was born as Evangeline Rose Gil Eigenmann and was considered as one of the best actresses in the history of Philippine cinema. Although Gil kicked off in show business when she was so young as she belongs to the well-known Eigenmann family of actors, she had her most significant breaks when she played in the 1980 Ishmael Bernal classic “Manila By Night” then the 1982 Peque Gallaga masterwork “Oro, Plata, Mata.”

Cherie Gil’s Cancer Became Her Cause of Death
Cherie Gil’s cancer was announced as her cause of death. In September 2014, Cherie’s brother, also a famous actor, Mark Gil, lost his life because of cirrhosis of the liver, arising from cancer of the liver, at the age of 52.
