Health Issue Becomes Sir Clive Sinclair’s Cause of Death at 81

Unfortunately, home computing pioneer Sir Clive Marles Sinclair passed away. Sir Clive Sinclair’s cause of death is confirmed as a long-time illness. His daughter, Belinda Sinclair, announced that her father passed away at his home in London this morning, September 16, 2021.

Sir Clive Sinclair was famed for popularising and bringing computers into people’s homes with his ZX Spectrum, an inspiration for games industry bosses. The inventor and entrepreneur also invented the pocket calculator.

The ZX80, his first home computer, named after the year it appeared, revolutionized the market, although it was far from today’s models. At £79.95 in kit form and £99.95 assembled, it was about one-fifth of the price of other home computers at that time. It sold 50,000 units while its successor, the ZX81, which replaced it, cost £69.95 and sold 250,000.

Several games industry experts started typing programs into their touch-based keyboard and became hooked on games like 3D Monster Maze and Mazogs. The ZX80-81 made him very rich in 2010. Sinclair said: “Within two or three years, we made £14m profit in a year.”

Sir Clive Sinclair’s Death Cause: Long-Time Illness

A long-time illness is revealed as the inventor and entrepreneur Sir Clive Sinclair’s cause of death at 81. After releasing the ZX Spectrum 48K, in 1982, its rubber keys, strange clashing visuals, and tinny sound didn’t prevent it from being pivotal in the development of the games industry.

In 1983, he became a household name as his products flew off the shelves and were awarded a knighthood. The C5, a battery-powered electric trike, was launched in 1985, with Sinclair predicting sales of 100,000 in one year.

But it flopped, and Sinclair Vehicles found itself in receivership by October of that year. Reviews expressed concerns about the safety of driving a vehicle below the sightline of other motorists, as well as exposure to the elements. The following year, Sir Clive sold his computer business to Amstrad.

The Sinclair TV80, a pocket TV, was another device, like the C5, that did not catch on, although people now regularly view programs on their mobile phones. And although they do not look like the Sinclair C5, which later acquired cult status, electric vehicles are, of course, all the rage today.

Clive Sinclair had an imaginative focus on personal transport in the 1990s and 2000s. He came up with the Zike electric bicycle; the Zeta electric motor to fit on to regular bicycles and a similar motor for wheelchairs; the Sea-doo SeaScooter for scuba divers; and the A-Bike, a lightweight folding cycle with small wheels, designed to be carried easily on trains by commuters in 2008.

Reactions to Sir Clive Sinclair’s Death

Several fans, friends, and supporters reacted and stated their condolences on social media websites following this tragic news.

A fan wrote: “The Spectrum 48k was my first home computer. Clive Sinclair gave a lot of us middle-aged blokes an advantage when we started work in the 90s; we already knew how to use computers before they were common in work. Love my elite man bag too! Cheers Clive.”

Another fan remarked that “If you are a fan of video games there is a very high chance that some of your favorite games are in part due to Sir Clive Sinclair and the influence he had on many game devs back in the 80s. Very sad news.”

An online user tweeted: “Sad to hear about Sir Clive Sinclair passing away. An entire generation of gamers and the British gaming industry owe him a huge debt of gratitude. RIP.”

Another wrote on Twitter: “It’s sad to hear the news that Sir Clive Sinclair has passed away. Without his dedication to bring affordable computers to the masses, the entire industry would be a very different place. Bedroom coders from the ZX generation pathed the future of indie game development IMO!”
