Janis was born in Manhattan on February 11, 1928. His father worked as an art dealer and writer; his mother, was also a writer.

He successfully auditioned for a road company at the young age of 13 and consequently spent the next two years with them. Janis also began doing radio voice work during this time

Conrad secured a role in the play “The Dark of the Moon” during its pre-Broadway run. He stayed with the production when it ran in NY, consequently making his Broadway debut in March 1945.

In 1945, Janis then made his film debut as Ronald Stevens in the film Snafu. He then played “Johnikins” in Margie with Jeanne Crain.

Janis starred in the film noir The Brasher Doubloon with American actor George Montgomery the following year.

Janis’s work on television included starring in “Fit to Kill” on The Web in November 1950. He played the eldest son Edward on the sitcom Bonino in 1953.

“All through the ’50s. I was in so many TV shows as a young musician on drugs, desperately trying to kick the habit, that I’m sure I helped cement in the public’s mind a relationship between musicians and dope,” Conrad told The Philadelphia Inquirer in 1981.

He added: “All they cast me in were shows in which I did or didn’t kick the habit. I was always saying, ‘Hey, man, I just got to have a fix.'”

He also appeared in an episode of Get Smart as a KAOS agent; guest-starred as a dance marathon emcee on The Golden Girls; and starred in the sci-fi sitcoms Quark and Mork and Mindy.

Conrad also featured in The Buddy Holly Story and the Goldie Hawn and George Segal comedy The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox.

He made a brief appearance as himself in the jazz bar scene from Nothing in Common. Janis was an advocate of traditional jazz.

In 1949, the late actor assembled a band of aging jazz greats, consisting of Henry Goodwin (trumpet), James P. Johnson (piano), Pops Foster (bass), Edmond Hall (clarinet), and Baby Dodds (drums), with himself on trombone.

His first marriage was to Vicki Quarles. They had two children: Christopher and Carin. His second marriage to Ronda Copland also ended in divorce.

Conrad married his third wife, Maria Grimm, in 1987. The couple remained married until her death in September 2021.

“Just saw that Conrad Janis, Mindy’s dad from “Mork & Mindy”, passed away at age 94 on March 1st. I can’t believe he was that old! I love that show. Now only Pam Dawber is left. RIP Mr. Janis #conradjanis,” David Pierce wrote on Twitter.

“Conrad Janis was much more than Mindy’s dad — he was also a successful art gallery owner and a jazz trombonist,” Scott Monty tweeted.
