Tyrone Hurler Damian Casey’s Sudden Death Shocked His Fans
With a heavy heart, we have to announce to you some tragic news. Unfortunately, an Irish hurler who was well-known for his play in the Tyrone county team passed away. Damian Casey’s death was announced on June 17, 2022, at the age of 29.
He was born in 1993, in Dungannon, County Tyrone, Ulster. Casey has educated at St Patrick’s Academy in his hometown. He attended, and graduated from, Ulster University, and represented it in the Fitzgibbon Cup. He later moved to Liverpool and lived there.
Casey played hurling since he was four or five. Also, Casey made his first appearance on the inter-county scene when he was selected for the Tyrone under-16 hurling team.
Just last month, in the Nicky Rackard Cup final victory over Roscommon at Croke Park, he top-scored with 14 points – it was his 40th championship appearance and he scored in every one of them.
Since he made his inter-county debut in 2012, he managed to score in each of his Tyrone’s 101 fixtures, recording an overall tally of 39 goals and 908 points during his career. Just a few weeks ago, he scored 14 points in Croke Park.
He was such a talented young man who played for the Eoghan Ruadh GAA club and he is remembered as one of the county’s best hurlers. Last month in Croke Park, he was the talisman of the Tyrone side who clinched Nicky Rackard Cup honors with a 1-21 to 0-19 victory over Roscommon.

On Friday, he was traveling to Spain to attend a wedding as a groomsman, and sadly he passed away at the wedding. Damian Casey’s death reason was reported as an incident in a swimming pool.

Players, clubs, and county boards are sending their condolences to Damian Casey’s family and loved ones. Michael Kerr who is a Tyrone county board chairman shared his feeling and said:
”This breaking news is beyond belief, Someone who brought honor, delight, and simple, straightforward gladness to our whole county, and far beyond, is gone and it’s so hard to take in.”
”We are deeply saddened to hear of the untimely passing of Damian Casey RIP. Damian was a terrific sportsman and the Academy and Tyrone’s most prolific hurler. He represented both with grace and skill. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family.” Academy Gaa tweeted.
