Security Researcher Dan Kaminsky’s Cause of Death is Unknown

Sad to announce that Co-Founder and Chief Scientist of White Ops, Dan Kaminsky’s cause of death has not been made known to the public. The security researcher died at 42 on April 23, 2021.

TRM Hacker Marc Rogers announced Dan Kaminsky’s death news through his Twitter page.

Dan discovered a fundamental flaw in the Domain Name System (DNS) protocol in July 2008. He wrote an op-ed for Cyber ScoopNews the day it debuted, where he called for a more reliable way to guard the Internet. He did DNS and the Internet a solid.

Dan cared, and IMO, security did up-level at the end. Dan Kaminsky is an internationally respected technologist who had spent almost two decades protecting the Internet.

Dan was one of the seven “key shareholders” able to restore the Internet’s Domain Name System if necessary. He is known for finding a core flaw on the Internet and then managing the charge to repair it.

He graduated from Clara Santa University with a Bachelor’s degree, Operations and Management of information services in 2002.

Dan Kaminsky’s Obituary

Dan Kaminsky’s death news came on Saturday morning, April 24, but his cause of death is yet to be confirmed.

Marc Rogers, the security researcher, announced his death with a tweet stating: “I guess theres no hiding it now. We lost @dakami yesterday. One of the brightest lights in infosec and probably the kindest soul I knew. The vacuum he leaves behind is impossible to measure. Please keep speculation to yourself and be respectful of his family and friends.”

Following the tragic news, several fans, friends, and supporters reacted and paid tribute, and stated their condolences on social media websites.

Dan Kaminsky’s Career Highlights

A wide range of attacks become feasible with most Internet-based applications depending on DNS to locate their peers, including website impersonation, email interception, and authentication bypass via the “Forgot My Password” feature on many websites.

Dan Kaminsky worked with DNS vendors in secret to develop a patch to make exploiting the vulnerability more difficult, releasing it in July 2008. The vulnerability itself had not been fully fixed, as it is a design flaw in DNS itself.

Dan had intended not to publicize features of the attack until 30 days after the release of the patch, but details were revealed on July 21, 2008. That information was quickly pulled down, but not before others had mirrored it.

According to Wikipedia, after disclosing his vulnerability, he received a substantial amount of mainstream press but experienced some backlash from the computer security community for not immediately disclosing the attack.

It is reported on Wikipedia that to fix this, all primary DNS servers implemented Source Port Randomization. This fix is widely seen as a stopgap measure, as it only makes the attack up to 65,536 times more complex.
