Share

With a heavy heart, we have to announce to you some tragic news. Unfortunately, an American referee, professional wrestling authority figure, promoter, and road agent passed away. Dave Hebner’s death was announced by his nephew on June 17, 2022, at the age of 73.

He was born on May 17, 1949, in Richmond, Virginia, the U.S. Hebner began his career as a professional wrestling referee in the late 1970s in the Richmond, Virginia area.

Hebner served as the referee for Randy Savage and Rickey Steamboat’s match at WrestleMania III. Also, he was the referee for the match between Savage and Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania V.

We are sad to announce that on June 17, 2022, we lost another legend. Former WWE referee Dave Hebner’s death originated from his illness.

In 1986, it was the first time that Hebner began refereeing for the WWE and officiated iconic bouts including the World Heavyweight title fight between Hulk Hogan and André the Giant in 1998.

Alongside twin brother Earl who they had a lot of memories together, he refereed that match with the pair famously confusing Hogan who thought he was seeing double.

Until 2005, after his refereeing career was over Dave Hebner worked backstage for WWE. Because of a knee injury, The icon was later forced to retire but continued to work in wrestling as a road agent before being let go in 2005.

For 43 years, he was married to his wife Rebecca. Also, his twin brother Earl, and his nephew Brian (Earl’s son) are also wrestling referees.

We’re sad to announce to you that two of the most beloved referees in WWE history have passed away this weekend. On June 19, 2022, and only two days after Dave Hebner’s death, former WWE referee and assistant to Andre the Giant Tim White passed away. May both of them rest in peace.

WWE noted one famous moment between Hebner and his brother, Earl Hebner, that took place in 1988 and said:
“Hebner and his brother Earl helped author one of the most memorable moments in WWE history when Andre The Giant and Hogan met on WWE Main Event for the WWE Title in 1988. With Dave locked in a closet, Earl and ‘Million Dollar Man’ Ted DiBiase laid a trap for The Hulkster. As Dave joined Earl in the ring, he had the befuddled Hogan seeing double in disbelief.”

His brother shared his sadness and said that he had to say his last goodbye to his other half, his partner in crime, his road buddy for years, and his brother for 73 years. He added: ”I love you, David, I’ll never count you out,”

”Damn, so sad to hear about Dave Hebner. Probably the best referee of all time and the most-watched referee of all time. He was involved in the aftermath of the Hulk – Andre “Main Event” match that did more viewers than any other in U.S. history”. Raj Giri tweeted.
