Longtime Canadian MP David Kilgour Sadly Passed Away

Today we lost a great figure! Canadian human rights activist, author, lawyer, and politician David Kilgour, unfortunately, passed away on, Tuesday, April 5, 2022, in Ottawa at the age of 81. May the legend rest in power.

Kilgour’s family confirmed the heartbreaking news, announcing that he was in communication with pals and activist colleagues around the world until the final days before his passing.

David Kilgour was an ex-cabinet minister famous in Ottawa for his fierce independent line and loyalty to human rights causes. In his about 3 decades as an MP, Kilgour proved himself as a vocal supporter of human rights causes. He additionally established himself as a brave legend to challenge his Commons colleagues and even party leaders.

First elected as an MP for Edmonton, Strathcona in 1979 as a member of the Progressive Conservative party, David left the caucus of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney in 1990 because he disagree with the GST.

He entered the Liberals months later and from 1997 to 2002, he worked as Canada’s secretary of state to Latin America and Africa, as well as secretary of state to the Asia-Pacific region for one year.

David quit a major federal party for the second time during his career in 2005 when he quit the Liberals over what he stated were “about 10 issues” with the party’s manners, such as the support scandal and its programs to legalize same-sex marriage.

David Kilgour Passed Away Due to Lung Disease

According to official reports, David Kilgour passed away because of lung disease. He was suffering from a rare lung disease that progressed fast over the past month, declared his wife Laura Scott Kilgour.

Kilgour additionally cited Canada’s unwillingness to participate in a global action to control the genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan as a cause of his exit. Ottawa finally sent humanitarian aid to Sudan, a move attributed in part to Kilgour’s persistent and public calls for action.

Kilgour served as an Independent MP in the House of Commons from 2005 until he retired from politics in 2006. As an Independent, Kilgour held the balance of power in Paul Martin’s minority Liberal government of the time.

Following his retirement from politics, Kilgour stayed active in human rights causes, especially China’s treatment of minority groups, such as practitioners of the Falun Gong religion.

On this day, also another Canadian great personality took his last breath! We were informed that sadly Canadian-American molecular biologist, and Nobel Prize winner, Sidney Altman passed away on April 5, 2022, at the age of 82 in Rockleigh, New Jersey. May he rest in peace.

Sidney was the Sterling Professor of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and Chemistry at Yale University, who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with Thomas R. Cech after they presented their project on the field of catalytic properties of RNA.

The tragedy has been announced by many of his friends; Ronald Breaker wrote on Twitter, “Sad to learn that #Yale Prof. and colleague #SidneyAltman, 1989 Chemistry #Nobel recipient, has died. His publication on the #ribozyme action of #RNaseP was a milestone discovery in the now exploding field of #ncRNA. The photo shows him celebrating the news of his Nobel Prize.”

Sidney Altman tied the knot to Ann M. Körner in 1972, and the couple shared two children, Daniel and Leah. The family first lived in the United States after leaving Montreal to attend MIT in 1958, he became a U.S. citizen in 1984.
