David Sassoli Died of Long-Time Health Issues at the Age of 65


Unfortunately, an Italian journalist who worked his way up in politics, David Sassoli sadly died at the age of 65. The activist who became president of the European Union’s parliament passed away in an Italian hospital on Tuesday, January 11, 2022.

According to his spokesman Roberto Cuillo, Sassoli had been hospitalized since December 26, 2021, because of abnormal functioning of his immune system. He will be buried on Friday at Rome’s Santa Maria degli Angeli, the church where state funerals are held.

David Maria Sassoli was battling with a bad health condition for months after he suffered pneumonia caused by the legionella bacteria back in September. His health steadily declined later and he was forced to miss several important legislative meetings.

However, he stayed on his job as much as possible; his energy and easy smile had always been a trademark.

He has improved sufficiently in recent months to preside over a European Parliament session in December to present Navalny’s daughter with the EU’s top human rights prize, the Sakharov Prize. It was full of symbolism and showcased him at his finest. A few weeks later, his New Year’s wishes revealed him to be an optimist with high hopes.

Last year, Pope Francis wrote an exceptionally poignant message of condolences to Sassoli’s wife, calling him an “animated believer of hope and charity who, in a peaceful and respectful way, worked for the common good with a generous commitment.”

He leaves behind his wife, Alessandra Vittorini, and his children, Giulio and Livia.

Sassoli took over as President of the European Parliament in 2019 after a tumultuous period of political infighting among EU leaders, which saw German Christian Democrat von der Leyen appointed President of the European Commission and Belgian free-market liberal Michel appointed President of the European Council. EU leaders chose Sassoli and von der Leyen seemingly out of nowhere, surprising themselves and the rest of the world.

Even if he was sometimes overshadowed by von der Leyen and Michel, Sassoli oversaw an organization that grew in prominence over time and played a key role in shaping the direction of the European Union in a variety of areas, including the digital economy, climate change, and Brexit.

He was an astute political shaker who exploited his good nature to assist bring some of the EU’s most pressing political issues to a successful conclusion, none more so than the 1.8 trillion-euro pandemic recovery fund and seven-year budget.

However, both the epidemic, which changed the European parliament into a distant digital institution where his human warmth was lost, and his own declining health had an influence on his leadership.

His apex occurred on the European stage, but he was just as well-liked in his homeland of Italy.

Flags flew half-staff and also the European Parliament opened a condolences register. The European Commission holds a minute of silence on Wednesday.

One wrote: “Thanks to #DavidSassoli‘s contribution, Europe chose solidarity and help for the weakest; it chose to help the countries most affected by the crisis (starting with Italy).”

Another tweeted: “When the pandemic started David Sassoli gave part of the EP premises to a Brussels organization helping vulnerable women and victims of domestic abuse. A truly good person. May he rest in peace.”
