Muriel Bowser’s sister, Mercia Bowser, died Wednesday, February 4, 2021, at age 64, the D.C. mayor stated. She was being treated for the sake of COVID-19-related pneumonia.

D.C. mayor shared an announcement, stating Mercia, her sister, was loved and will be missed greatly, as she meets the legion of angels who have left home too soon because of the pandemic.

She asks that people continue to have those who have been lost or affected by the pandemic and those who are fighting so hard to protect people from it in their thoughts and prayers.

The mayor replied that Mercia was a kind daughter, sister, aunt, and friend to her. She served tirelessly for children, the elderly, and people with behavioral disorders until her departure and beyond. She figured many friends and fond thoughts of her assistance to Catholic Charities and the D.C. Office on Aging.

According to the mayor’s Wednesday declaration., 64-year-old Mercia Bowser is survived by Joan and Joseph Bowser, her parents, and her sister, Muriel Bowser, her brothers, nephews, nieces, and friends.

The news appears on the same day that the D.C. mayor called Wednesday “A Day of Remembrance for Lives Lost to COVID-19” in the nation’s capital. On Wednesday, Washington, D.C., surpassed 1000 deaths from COVID-19 since the opening of the pandemic.

“These beautiful souls who passed were grandparents, parents, siblings, cousins, neighbors, classmates, colleagues, friends, and loved ones.” Mayor Bowser said in Wednesday’s statement alongside the proclamation.

She also added that this tragic anniversary notes that this pandemic has forever traded families and communities. She replied that even when the pandemic drops, the grief and loss will still be there for many.

Muriel Bowser reminded us that people would never know how many lives have been protected through our shared responsibility to wearing masks and social distancing.

Bowser this week further decreed the flags to half-staff in D.C. in tributes of the over 500,000 Americans who have passed away from COVID-19 since the opening of the pandemic last year.

Mayor Bowser is not the first famous figure who loses her family member due to COVID-19. Popular American rapper Jeezy also lost her mother a few days ago.

Fans are still asking about Jeezy’s mom’s cause of death while US day News has learned she passed away today (Feb. 17), according to an Instagram post of the rapper. May she rest in peace.

Social Media’s Reaction to DC Mayor’s Sister Passing

American journalist Julie Zauzmer reacted to DC Mayor’s hard situation writing, “Very sad: On the day DC marked 1000 deaths from coronavirus,” she wrote, “Mayor Bowser just shared that her sister died of the virus today. ‘She joins the legion of angels who have gone home too soon due to the pandemic,’ Bowser wrote.”

DCist reporter Margaret Barthel tweeted: “This is so, so sad,” she expressed herself, “Thinking of Mayor Bowser and her family and mourning the death of her sister Mercia,” She also added, “And I’m grieving for the families of all the thousand Washingtonians who have died of COVID-19. A brutal year for this beloved community.”

“My condolences to Mayor Bowser and her family,” Ted Leonsis composed, “Today, as Washington, DC announced that more than 1,000 residents of the city have been lost to COVID-19, my thoughts and prayers are with the Mayor and all those who have been impacted by the pandemic.”

“I extend deepest condolences to Mayor Bowser and her family on the passing of her sister, Mercia,” American lawyer Kenyan McDuffie was also deeply saddened by the news, “She was a champion for underserved communities—especially people with developmental disabilities and behavioral disorders. Her advocacy and service to our city will be sorely missed.”
