Conn. Television, Radio Pioneer Dick Bertel Sadly Dies at 92

One of the pioneers of Connecticut television and radio, Dick Bertel passed away at 92 years old on September 11, 2023.
Richard Bertelmann was born on January 6, 1931, in The Bronx, New York, U.S. Bertel was a radio and television personality and broadcasting executive.

He was known for his work locally in Hartford, Connecticut, nationally on the NBC and Mutual Broadcasting System radio networks, and internationally for the Voice of America.
During the years 1948–1955, his career began at Fairfield County radio stations in the New York suburbs surrounding Darien and strung along the Boston Post Road corridor.
In April 1948, shortly before graduating from high school, he requested a tour of WNLK, a new daytime-only radio station, and was offered an unpaid position.
A few months Bertel hosted The Hi Teen Show, a weekly Saturday morning program featuring local amateur singers, and sketches performed by teenagers.
From September 1948 to June 1952 Bertelmann concurrently commuted from Darien to Manhattan on the New Haven Railroad to gain a degree in broadcasting from New York University (NYU).

Dick Bertel Passed away at 92
Bertel’s family confirmed that Dick Bertel sadly passed away on Monday, surrounded by his family in Maryland.
Bertel covered some of the biggest events of his time and was one of the first broadcasters in Connecticut to report the tragic news of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
Bertelmann interviewed governors, senators, presidential candidates, and celebrities. After leaving Connecticut Richard joined Voice of America radio, and worked overseas in Europe.
Dennis House had this to say about Bertelmann’s death calling him a mentor: “I’ll always remember Dick Bertel’s kindness and advice he gave me over the years.
“His contributions to Connecticut television and radio were numerous and I am grateful to him for inspiring me.”
He leaves behind his wife and three children. Funeral services are pending.
