Longtime St. Joseph-Ogden football coach Dick Duval’s cause of death has been revealed after he passed away on Thursday morning (September 17, 2022) at the age of 64. May he rest in peace.

The heartbreaking news has been confirmed by SJ-O superintendent Brian Brooks who announced the legend’s passing to The News-Gazette on Thursday afternoon.

Duval lost his life about six days after the Hall of Fame coach was introduced last Friday night in a touching ceremony at the Spartans’ Glenn Fisher Athletic Complex. It followed with many the well-wishers turning out to see Duval, flanked by his family, as SJ-O’s football field formally was titled Dick Duval Field.

Many gathered at the newly named Dick Duval Field last Friday to honor the great coach. Late Duval, originally from Herscher, came to SJO in 1988 as a young coach seeming to begin leading a program. The next season, he led the Spartans to the state title game, one of five plays in the championships.

He discovered last March the field he coached on for above a quarter-century would bear his name. It was a long journey since then, as Duval battled pancreatic cancer, although his family maintains the moment the tarp came off the scoreboard is a moment they’ll cherish forever.

Brooks announced programs are in the works for a memorial of Duval before Friday night’s football match between SJ-O and Monticello at Dick Duval Field.

“We will definitely have a moment of silence,” Brooks stated. “There are some people working on the possibility of painting a couple of things in his memory on the football field.”

Brooks recognized emotions possibly will be high when that game starts at 7 p.m., regarding that Duval was a part-time teacher at Monticello as well after he retired from SJ-O.

“Dick would want it no other way than to play on and go out there and play under the lights on Friday night,” Brooks continued, “but it’ll be a tough night and an exciting night at the same time.”
