Former Basketball Coach Don Usher Passed Away

Today we learned that sadly the New Canaan’s legendary coach Don Usher passed away on May 18, 2022, at the age of 80. May he rest in peace and his loved ones received enough power from God to deal with the great loss.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed by Sportswriter and podcaster for GametimeC Scott Ericson in a statement shared on Twitter.

The statement read, “Former legendary New Canaan basketball coach Don Usher has died after a fight with cancer. Brought two NC teams to the CIAC Class LL championship game. #ctbb.”

Another user also posted that legendary Rams basketball coach Don Usher took his last breath yesterday afternoon. Usher became the winner in 272 games in his career that lasted from 1977 to 1995.

Usher coached the Rams from 1976 to 1995, leading New Canaan to the state tournament in 13 of his 19 years at the helm. He won 272 games in his career with three FCIAC Eastern Division championships and two appearances in the state finals, in 1980 and 1989.

The news came out just days after Andrew Woolfolk’s cause of death was released. He passed away, announced officially on April 26, 2022, at the age of 71, due to a long-term illness.

According to Tad Keating, a player on the 1980 state finalist team and an assistant coach in 1989, the discipline Usher comprehended from his time in the military and as an educator carried over completely to the hardwood.
