Irish Actor Donal Courtney’s Death After a Brief Illness

We are sad to announce to you that Kerry actor, director, and former ”Fair City” and ”BBC”s ”The Tudors” actor, Donal Courtney’s death at the age of 52 resulted from a short illness that shocked everyone and broke their hearts. May he rest in peace.

In 1991 He graduated from Dublin’s Gaiety School of Acting where he studied an MA in Theatre Practice in Maynooth.

Courtney was born in Killarney and he was the son of Michael Courtney, former Killarney councilor and tourism director, who passed away in 2010.

”God Has No Country” was his one-man show. The play was written by himself and won acclaim for his performance in it. Also, Donal documented the story of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty during World War II.

Besides his movies, he also played a role in many plays, like:

  • ‘The Importance of Being Earnest
  • Philadelphia, here I come!’
  • The Man from Clare’
  • Waiting for Godot’

He was married and had two children but there is no specific information about them.

The West End House – School of Arts in Killarney was Courtney’s latest enterprise that he and Michael Fassbender who Courtney introduced to acting, began to work on this last year.

Donal Courtney’s Death Broke His Fans Heart

The Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society published a statement to pay a tribute to Courtney after his death was sadly announced.

They shared their sadness and said: ”It was with great shock and sadness that we heard yesterday of the untimely passing of our dear friend Donie Courtney, renowned drama coach, playwright, producer, director, and performer”.

Ciarán Fogarty tweeted: ”So sorry to hear of the death of Donal Courtney #RIP. Donal came here with his remarkable play ‘When God Has No Country’ about Mons. Hugh O’Flaherty. He was generous with his time and did a Q&A after the play MarinoInstitute for our Iona college IonaStudyAbroad students in 2014”.

Donal was a true friend of the Society, using his great creative talent to help us spread awareness in a most unique way. A master dramatist has left us, but his legacy remains.

They also added that to his wife Adeline and his two young children and to his siblings and the wider Courtney family, they extend their deepest Sympathies and sincere Condolences.

Niamh tweeted: Shocked at the news of my acting teacher “Donal Courtney”, I knew him since I was 15 years old at the gaiety school of acting, I am so glad that he got to see me act and audition from a child actor to an adult. RIP
