Jeremiah Martin Green was born on March 4, 1977, in Oahu, Hawaii, United States. He took drumming lessons for three months in his teen years but was uninspired by his teacher.

Green immersed himself in the Seattle music scene, joining a band and attending concerts at night. His early influences included local bands such as Hammerbox and Treepeople.

His favorite band was the English Gothic rock band The Cure. Jeremiah was particularly inspired by the drumming on their 1982 album Pornography. He also cited the D.C. post-hardcore band Fugazi as his greatest influence for starting a band.

Jeremiah began his touring and recording career while he was in high school. He played with the bands Red Stars Theory on Touch and Go Records, Satisfact on K Records, and Peeved on Distressed Records.

He also played with a band by the name of Vells, as well as another group named Psychic Emperor. Both groups played at venues around Seattle and the Pacific Northwest.

In 2003, on the day of his birthday, he quit Modest Mouse. Green later revealed that he suffered a nervous breakdown and was shortly admitted to a psychiatric hospital.

After quitting, the band had quickly convinced him to return, but on the second day of recording in Portland Green exploded in argument and then “disappeared” for two months.

Faced with Green’s absence, the band initially considered breaking up. Jeremiah was eventually replaced by Benjamin Weikel of The Helio Sequence.

He officially rejoined the band in May 2004. In 2007, Jeremiah appeared on Graig Markel’s Via Novella on the Sonic Boom Label. Green released a drum breaks 7″ collaboration with Plastiq Phantom in May 2008.

Isaac Brock, 47, confirmed the sad news about Green’s cancer on Wednesday, December 28, 2022. “Some of you may have already heard, but I figured it would be good to hear the news directly from our camp,” he wrote via Modest Mouse’s official Instagram.

The “Float On” singer said in his statement that Jeremiah was diagnosed with cancer a short while ago, and he was in treatment. Brock added: “It seems to be going smoothly and making a positive difference.”

“Jeremiah, as am I, are believers in the power of positive energy, so if you would be so kind as to send ‘good vibes’ (to quote Jeremiah) in the direction of Jeremiah and his family, that’d be great,” the singer wrote.

Green was married to Lauren Green, who owned the store Thuja in downtown Port Townsend. His son Wilder was born in 2016.

The tributes started pouring in for the late artist. Bandmate Simon O’Connell shared a lengthy tribute where he stated Jeremiah was the reason he joined the band.

“RIP Jeremiah Green. An unbelievably inventive drummer for the band that shaped my entire musical taste and I loved more than anything when I was in high school. I tried to figure out how to play Truckers Atlas for at least 10 years. Could never get it right. What a legend,” Sam Cooper tweeted.

Skateboarder Tony Hawk commented on the band’s post: “Sweetest dude ever. He will be missed dearly.”

Johnny Marr, a former member of the band, wrote, “The great Jeremiah Green. My friend, bandmate, and the most creative musician I ever met.”

Former tour mate and The Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney also paid a touching tribute to Green, writing, “🙏 Rest In Peace Jeremiah ❤️.”
