Story of Olympic Skier Elena Fanchini’s Cause of Death

A three-time Winter Olympian in alpine skiing, Elena Fanchini’s cause of death was announced after the legend passed away on Wednesday ( February 8, 2023) at the age of 37.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the star and her family, friends, and fans during this painful period. May she rest in peace. Fanchini passed away Wednesday at her home in Solato, near Brescia, the Italian Winter Sports Federation announced.
Fanchini last time competed in December 2017 and lost the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 to undergo treatment. She was cleared to come back to train nearly one year later, however, the Italian struggled with injuries and officially announced her retirement in 2020 along with her sister Nadia.
Fanchini’s younger sisters Nadia and Sabrina were also World Cup racers.
During her career, the Lovere native was awarded two World Cup wins (2005, 2015), and also she won a silver medal downhill at her home World Championships in 2005 in Bormio.
The news of her passing cut celebrations short in the Italian camp in Meribel, France, where Fanchini’s ex-teammates Federica Brignone and Marta Bassino were awarded world titles on Monday and Wednesday.

The skier whose career was cut short by a tumor, Elena Fanchini’s cause of death was reported as having cancer; she lost her life following a serious illness, the Italian Winter Sports Federation said in a statement.

A few weeks ago, Sofia Goggia dedicated her win in Cortina d’Ampezzo to Fanchini, whose condition had worsened in the last few months.
Ten months later, she won a World Cup downhill in Canada with “Ciao Mamma” scribbled on face tape to guard against 1-degree temperatures. She was 20. Nobody younger than 21 has won a World Cup downhill since. Her second and final World Cup win, also a downhill, came more than nine years later.
In between her two World Cup wins, Fanchini raced at three Olympics with a best finish of 12th in the downhill in 2014. She missed the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics because of her condition.
