Carol says his husband, Emilio, was still a working actor right up until the Corona-Virus pandemic. He played the lead in “Quixote Nuevo,” a theater production that had a 3-city run before things were shut down. Delgado also recently did some voiceover work in January 2022.
Emilio Delgado was born on May 8, 1940, in Calexico, California. He was a television, film, and stage actor, voice artist, and singer.
The beloved Mexican-American actor was mainly known for his role as Luis, the Fix-it Shop owner, on the children’s television series Sesame Street.

Details of Emilio Delgado’s Cause of Death at 81?
The beloved Sesame Street singer and actor Emilio Delgado’s cause of death is reported as blood cancer Multiple Myeloma. May he rest in peace.
After being diagnosed with the blood cancer Multiple Myeloma in 2020, the artist was placed in hospice care. US day News is working to provide more information and collect the latest updates surrounding Emilio Delgado’s death, so stay up with us.
Delgado was raised in his grandparents’ house in Mexicali, Mexico, with his poor extended family. As a citizen of the United States, Emilio would walk daily to attend a public school in Calexico, California.
His family moved to Glendale, California when Emilio was a teenager. During high school, he became president of the Thespian Club, played trombone both in the orchestra and a jazz band, and was a drum major in the marching band.
In 1968 he began acting professionally, after 9 years of “trying to knock doors down in Los Angeles to get in.” Delgado received his first Equity job in a summer stock play starring Martha Raye and was cast in the first Mexican-American soap opera, Cancion de la Raza.
Delgado learned of the new theatre program at CalArts, led by Provost Herb Blau. He praised Blau’s methods, suggesting his avant-garde method was “amazing.”
As of 1970, he was the artistic director of the new Mexican-American Centre of Creative Arts, which taught high school and college students from the basement of the Euclid Heights Community Centre in East Los Angeles.

“We are 100% positive in our approach, and we are uncompromising in our belief that our kids will come away thinking of themselves as artists. Nothing is going to stop us from attaining our identification in American society,” Emilio told the Los Angeles Times.
Delgado had a guest role in an episode Storefront Lawyers, before being cast as a series regular in Angie’s Garage. The new children’s series focused on serving Mexican-American children. Emilio was billed as a singer-guitarist.
Emilio believed that Sesame Street producers discovered him through the series. During Sesame Street’s 19th season, first aired in 1988, Emilio’s character Luis became engaged to and married Maria, played by Sonia Manzano.
According to him, “there are fans out there who want to believe that the Luis and Maria wedding episode in 1988 was real, but the fact of the matter is, it was just terrific acting.”
He later starred at various pop culture conventions, often under the brand “Humans of Sesame Street”. The artist also reprised the role of Luis in the TV special Sesame Street’s 50th Anniversary Celebration.
The actor also performed in live shows throughout his Sesame Street career, singing the songs of Sesame Street and entertaining many children and their families.
He starred in the Alley Theatre production of Octavio Solis‘ Quixote Nuevo, a modern Chicano adaptation of Don Quixote.
Delgado had a son, Aram, from a previous marriage. He tied the knot with Carole, from ca. 1989. Together the couple had one daughter, Lauren.
Emilio’s voice has been described as “gravelly and sonorous, his words precise and deliberate.”
