The heartbreaking news was confirmed in a statement posted on the band’s website on Tuesday, announcing that, “With the deepest regret we must announce the death on 19 February 2022 of Gary Brooker MBE, singer, pianist and composer of Procol Harum, and a brightly-shining, irreplaceable light in the music industry.”

The statement read, “He lit up any room he entered, and his kindness to a multilingual family of fans was legendary.”

In 1962, Brooker founded The Paramounts with his guitarist friend Robin Trower. The group gained respect within the burgeoning 1960s British R&B scene, which yielded The Spencer Davis Group, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Animals, and many others.

The Rolling Stones were Paramounts fans, giving them guest billing on memorable shows in the early 1960s.

In 1966, Gary founded Procol Harum with his friend Keith Reid. Procol Harum is best known for his A Whiter Shade of Pale hit.

In the early years, Gary, Hammond organist Matthew Fisher and Robin Trower were the guiding musical forces behind the band, though after disparities in style became too much and Fisher and Trower left, Gary Brooker was the clear leader until the band broke up in 1977.

He started a solo career and released the album No More Fear of Flying in 1979. The same year, he joined friend Eric Clapton‘s band.

He joined Clapton for several one-off benefit gigs over the years. Gary sang the lead vocal of the song “No News from the Western Frontier”, a single taken from the album Hi-Tec Heroes by performer Ad Visser.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, fans, and all of his loved ones on these challenging days. You can also leave a condolence message below the comment box to honor him.
