What Led to NCAA Champion Greg Lee’s Death at 70?

Former UCLA men’s basketball guard passed away at the age of 70 on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, his wife confirmed Thursday afternoon. Greg Lee’s cause of death was revealed by reliable sources.

Lee died at a hospital in San Diego, United States due to an infection related to an immune disorder. “The Bruins’ basketball program mourns the passing of former UCLA guard Greg Lee, who was a part of undefeated back-to-back NCAA championship teams in 1972 and 1973,” UCLA Men’s Basketball’s official Twitter account wrote.

Gregory Scott Lee was born on December 12, 1951, in Reseda, Los Angeles. He attended Reseda High School (CA). Then the player was named valedictorian before enrolling at UCLA.

His father, Marvin, was a center for the Bruins in the 1940s. Greg eventually became a regular starter under legendary coach John Wooden, with the team going 86-4 across his 3 seasons alongside classmates Jamaal Wilkes and Bill Walton.

They starred on the undefeated freshman team before freshmen were permitted to play varsity, with The 6-foot-4 Lee averaging 17.9 points per game compared to Bill Walton’s 18.1 and Jamaal Wilkes’ 20.0.

Greg averaged 5.8 points and 1.5 rebounds per game in 88 career appearances. The Bruins won the 1972 and 1973 NCAA championships with Greg starting at the point.

Following Lee’s collegiate career, he turned pro and was selected in the NBA and ABA drafts. The Atlanta Hawks drafted Lee in the 7th round (115th pick overall) of the 1974 NBA Draft.

The San Diego Conquistadors drafted Lee in the 5th round of the ABA Draft the same year. Greg chose the Conquistadors, averaging 3.6 points and 2.6 assists in 5 games.

The next season, the player moved to the NBA, appearing in 5 games for the Portland Trail Blazers and averaging 1.2 points and 2.2 assists.

Greg Lee’s Cause of Death Relates to an Immune Disorder

According to sources, former UCLA men’s basketball guard Greg Lee’s cause of death was related to an immune disorder. May he rest in peace.

Lee joined Walton and the Portland Trailblazers, and after putting up 2.2 assists and 1.2 points per game in the National Basketball Association, he went to Germany to play for TuS 04 Leverkusen.

His basketball career came to a close, but he resumed his athletic pursuits by starting a career in volleyball. The player teamed up with UCLA alumnus Jim Menges, who had played volleyball for the Bruins.

As a pair, they won 25 of the 30 tournaments they starred in, with three 2nd-place finishes and two 3rd-place finishes mixed in as well.

Greg eventually became a math teacher at Clairemont High School in San Diego. He also coached varsity basketball and tennis. Greg suffered from neuropathy in his later years and had a heart valve that needed to be replaced.

Lee is survived by his beloved wife, Lisa; his brother, Jon; his daughter, Jessamyn Feves; his son, Ethan; his son-in-law, Ryan; and his two grandchildren, Opal and Donovan.

After the sad news of Greg Lee’s death was revealed, his friends and fans quickly flooded social media with tribute messages. Many fans also took to Twitter to pay touching tributes to him.

“Former UCLA basketball player Greg Lee, a starter on two national championship teams under John Wooden in 1972 and 1973 before going on to great success in beach volleyball, has died. He was 70,” Ben Bloch said on Twitter.

Journalist Lyle Spencer tweeted: “Wounded again with news of passing of old friend Greg Lee, a star #UCLA point guard and best bud of Bill Walton. Through Greg I met Bill their freshmen year, before I saw them play. Greg was 2-time City POY at Reseda HS playing for his dad. Smart, enlightened, cool. Greg was 70.”
