The Santa Fe Sheriff’s Department confirmed Thursday night that Baldwin discharged a prop firearm that killed Rust cinematographer Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza.
Hutchins, 42, passed away not long after being transported to a hospital in Albuquerque, NM. Souza, 48, remains in a local hospital, and his condition is unknown.
A Santa Fe Sheriff’s Department official said in a statement: “Mr. Baldwin was questioned by investigators and released. No arrests or charges have been filed.”
After a 911 caller reported a shooting on the set of the western “Rust,” Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the location.
The sheriff’s office reported that two individuals were shot on the set of Rust. Halyna Hutchins, director of photography, and Joel Souza, director, were shot when a prop gun was discharged by Alec Baldwin, producer, and actor.
Ms. Hutchins was transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital via helicopter. But unfortunately, she was pronounced dead by medical personnel. Joel Souza was transported by ambulance to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical center.

Halyna Hutchins was shot and killed by Alec Baldwin in a freak movie-set accident.
Hutchins was born in 1979 in Ukraine. She worked as an investigative journalist before starting filmmaking and moving to the United States.
In 2018, She was selected for the 21st Century Fox DP Lab. She was named a rising star of cinematography by American Cinematographer magazine in 2019.
Hutchins has an extensive resume in film. The late artist worked on “Blindfire,” “Darlin’,” “The Mad Hatter,” and mini TV series “A Luv Tale: The Series.”
One of her AFI teachers, Bill Dill, said: “She had an interesting background, and I think that made for a unique perspective on the world. She brought a wealth of experience to the movie-making process.”
Hutchins is survived by her husband, Matthew Hutchins, with whom she shares an eight-year-old son.
Alec Baldwin issued a statement on his Twitter account Friday expressing his deepest grief over Hutchins’ passing. “There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother, and deeply admired colleague of ours,” he wrote.
“I’m fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred, and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna,” the 63-year-old actor added.

Reactions to Halyna Hutchins’ Death
Shortly after the heartbreaking news of Halyna Hutchins’ death was revealed, many friends and fans stated their condolences and paid poignant tributes to her.
Cinematographers Guild expressed shock and regret. “We received the devastating news this evening, that one of our members, Halyna Hutchins, the Director of Photography on a production called Rust in New Mexico died from injuries sustained on the set,” the Cinematographers Guild’s National Executive Director, Rebecca Rhine and National President, John Lindley said.
“The details are unclear at this moment, but we are working to learn more, and we support a full investigation into this tragic event,” the guild executives added.
President Lesli Linka Glatter of the Directors Guild said: “The DGA is incredibly saddened to hear of the tragic passing of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and the serious injuries sustained by DGA director Joel Souza in an on-set incident in New Mexico today.”
“We await further details and a full investigation. Our hearts go out to Halyna’s family, to Joel, and to everyone impacted,” he added.
Adam Egypt Mortimer paid tribute to his friend on Twitter and wrote: “I’m so sad about losing Halyna. And so infuriated that this could happen on a set. She was a brilliant talent who was absolutely committed to art and to film.”
