Fans Mourn Movie Star Helmut Berger’s Death at 78

Austrian actor Helmut Berger’s death was announced by his agent on May 18, 2023. He died “peacefully but nevertheless unexpectedly” at his home in Salzburg according to a statement issued by his agent.
In a message, the rep added: “(Berger) enjoyed his motto La Dolce Vita to the full all his life.” No further details were given.
Helmut Berger was born on May 29, 1944, in Bad Ischl, Austria. He was one of the biggest stars of European cinema in the ’60s and ’70s.
Berger is perhaps well known for his performance in Luchino Visconti’s 1969 movie The Damned, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe.
He appeared as King Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1973’s Ludwig and starred opposite American actor Burt Lancaster in 1974’s Conversation Piece.
In addition, he landed roles in Hollywood projects such as 1973’s Ash Wednesday, which also featured Elizabeth Taylor and Henry Fonda, as well as 1975’s The Romantic Englishwoman.

Helmut Berger’s death was confirmed by his agent. According to a statement issued by his agent, he passed away on May 18, 2023, at the age of 78.
After suffering several bouts of pneumonia, Berger retired from acting in November 2019 and said that he wanted to spend his remaining years away from the public.
Helmut was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for his role in The Damned in 1969. He won a David di Donatello – the Italian equivalent of an Academy Award – for his performance in Ludwig in 1973.
In 2007, Berger received a special Teddy Award at the 57th Berlin International Film Festival (2007) for his overall professional achievements.

Openly bisexual, he had relationships with director Visconti and actress Marisa Berenson. He tied the knot with Italian writer and model Francesca Guidato from 1994 until they separated in 2010.
