Austrian artist, physicist, philosopher, and science fiction, Herbert W. Franke’s obituary has been revealed after the passed away on July 16, 2022, at the age of 95. May the great artist rest in peace.

Die Zeit remembered him as “the most prominent German writing Science Fiction author”. Herbert was additionally one of the important early computer artists and collectors, creating computer graphics and premature digital art since the 1950s.

The late artist was also active in the branches of future study as well as speleology. He was fascinated by his official name Sergius Both as this Avatar name in Active Worlds and Opensimulator grids.

Herbert was awarded the Sergius Both Award for innovative scripting in Immersionskunst by Stiftung Kunstinformatik, for the first time handed out at Amerika Art 2022.

He reportedly leaves behind his wife, Susanne Päch-Franke, and their children.

In one of his latest interviews, Herbert W. Franke informed the site that blockchain “is a totally new environment, and this technology is still in its early stages, like at the beginning of computer art. But I am convinced that it has opened a new door for digital art and introduced the next generation to this new technology.”
