He also shared a photo of the late musician, adding, “Here he is, last year at 91, hanging out on a couch w/ trumpeter James Williams, who became Fine’s primary caretaker Photo by Chris Granger #RIP #music #NewOrleans.”

At 91, jazz cornetist Jack Fine believed his rambling days were done. He was a cop in New York and a musician in Paris, being survived three plane crashes and ran a mob-connected club in Greenwich Village. He hung out with Billie Holiday and ate ice cream on Louis Armstrong’s stoop.

Late in life, he moved to New Orleans and became a fixture on Frenchmen Street, a jazz elder statesman with a sweet tone and an endless supply of stories.

He was born in New York, a one-time resident of Paris, Fine previously stated New Orleans is his true home belting out, “Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans?”

Other famous musicians remembered him as a master at his craft. Detroit Brooks met Fine when he starred at Snug Harbor across the street from Fine’s gig at the Spotted Cat. He said, “I heard Mr. Jack playing at the Spotted Cat across the street. What he was playing was so great. Every Monday after that, I would get to my gig early to listen to him.”
