The editor and innovator passed away on Friday, February 4, 2022, at his home in Sag Harbor, N.Y., on Long Island.
Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Jason Wolkow Epstein graduated from Columbia College of Columbia University in 1949. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
Epstein received a Master of Arts degree from Columbia and joined Doubleday and Company as an editorial trainee.
In 1958, he left Doubleday to join Random House where he served as editorial director. At Random House Jason edited such writers as Philip Roth, Gore Vidal, Jane Jacobs, Norman Mailer, Vladimir Nabokov, Ben-Zion Netanyahu, E. L. Doctorow, Michael Korda, Paul Kennedy, and Peter Matthiessen.
During the New York newspaper strike of 1963, Jason, his wife Barbara, and their friends Elizabeth Hardwick and Robert Lowell created The New York Review of Books and turned to Robert Silvers to be its editor along with Barbara.
Epstein received the National Book Award for Distinguished Service to American Letters. He also received the Curtis Benjamin Award of the Association of American Publishers for Creative Publishing, the Philolexian Award for Distinguished Literary Achievement, the Lifetime Achievement Award of the National Book Critic’s Circle. and the Bulldog Award.

After the sad news of Jason Epstein’s death was revealed, his friends and fans quickly flooded social media with tribute messages. Many fans also took to Twitter to pay Pigonant tributes to him.
Paul Goldberger wrote: “Deeply saddened to learn of the death of Jason Epstein, one of the most brilliant editors of all time. He convinced me to write the book that ultimately became ‘Why Architecture Matters.'”
“A truly remarkable man and a powerful force in American publishing for more than half a century, he became a dear friend and will be deeply missed by all of us who had the pleasure and honor of knowing him (and/or eating one of his home-cooked meals) RIP,” Doron Weber tweeted.
“A reminder that if we always publish the way people before us published, we wouldn’t have books at all: “Jason has the mind of a scholar and the instincts of a pushcart peddler,” another fan wrote.
“If you enjoy the higher quality, larger size softcovers that dominate today’s bookshelves, you have Jason Epstein to thank for them. When pulp was the rule of the day, he envisioned something better,” a Twitter user said.
Someone tweeted: “I had the pleasure of getting to know Jason in his later years, when cooking and eating became his chief expressive passions. He made me an awesome omelette once.”
“Man, this is so sad. Jason was a titan in the industry and I was very lucky to interview him at his home in Sag Harbor a few years ago,” Lance Richardson wrote.
