Wrestling Star Jay Briscoe’s Tragic Accident Leads to Death
According to reports, Jay Briscoe’s accident led to his tragic death on Tuesday (January 17, 2023). The wrestling star was among two people killed in a car crash in Delaware.
Ring of Honor (ROH) and AEW president Tony Khan took to Twitter to announce the heartbreaking news. “Sadly, Jamin Pugh has passed away. Known to fans as Jay Briscoe, he was a star in ROH for over 20 years, from the first show until today,” Khan tweeted.
“Jay and his brother Mark dominated ROH, reigning as champions to this day. We’ll do whatever we can to support his family. Rest In Peace Jamin,” Khan added.
According to Sports Illustrated, Briscoe, whose real name was Jamin Pugh, and another adult were killed in an accident in Laurel.
Two others in the vehicle were also injured, including at least one juvenile. State police are expected to release the identities later today.
The Laurel School District is closed Wednesday due to Briscoe’s death. The district shared the following announcement on its Facebook page on Tuesday: “Due to an unthinkable tragedy in our community this evening, the Laurel School District will be closed for tomorrow, Wednesday, January 18, 2023.”
“Schools will reopen Thursday. Please keep the Pugh family in your thoughts and prayers,”

Jamin Pugh was born on January 25, 1984, in Salisbury, Maryland, United States. He was an American professional wrestler better known by his ring name, Jay Briscoe.
The wrestler was best known for his time with Ring of Honor, where at the time of his passing he was one-half of the ROH World Tag Team Champions with his brother Mark in their 13th reign.
Jay was a two-time ROH World Champion and ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Champion. He was inducted into the ROH Hall of Fame last year.
He held titles in New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Impact Wrestling. The Briscoe Brothers are believed to be one of the best tag teams of all time to never perform for WWE.
Over the years, the Briscoe brothers had memorable storylines with tag teams like the Motor City Machine Guns, the Kevin Steen & El Generico (now Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn, respectively), Young Bucks, and the Second City Saints (CM Punk and Colt Cabana).
Jay’s 286-day ROH world title reign, his second run as champ, included defenses against Kyle O’Reilly, Samoa Joe, Adam Cole, and Tommaso Ciampa.
Hours before the fatal accident, Jay had tweeted a picture showing him and his brother, Mark, celebrating their long reign as tag team champions.
Briscoe’s fans and friends responded on social media, calling the news “unbelievably sad” and “crushing”.
In a statement, Ring Of Honor wrote: “it is with a heavy heart that we mourn the tragic passing of Jamin Pugh” and “our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and his fans”.
WWE star Matt Hardy also reacted to the sad news and said that he was “devastated” and “in shock” to hear about Jay’s death. Hardy also said that he was “honored” to work with Briscoe.
He wrote: “Jay was SO real. Jay loved his wife & kids more than anything & we shared that bond. I’m heartbroken for his family.”
WWE’s Triple H used social media to pay touching tributes to Briscoe, calling him an “incredible performer”.
