Renaissance One Writers & Events was the first to announced: “We are incredibly saddened to announce that our dear friend JeanBintaBreeze MBE – poet, artist, theatre director, choreographer, actor, and teacher – has died in Jamaica, aged 65. Sending our deepest condolences to her family and friends during this terribly sad time.”

One replied: “Fullbodyheart memory of hearing Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze read – sing, live, make alive – her poetry at the Old Operating Theatre Museum maybe 20 years ago. Her brilliance.”

The Poetry Society also shared: “I now stir the skies” We are so sad to learn of the death of poet JeanBintaBreeze, much loved Jamaican-Londoner. Sharing below, her poem Rising, recently displayed on the tube as a Poems on the Underground poster.”

Kate Maltby replied to a tweet and also made the heartbreaking announcement: “A brilliant life. Here is JeanBintaBreeze performing live at the Y in Leicester in 2010.”

Before traveling to Britain, she studied at the Jamaican School of Drama. She left there at the age of thirty with the poet Linton Kwesi Johnson.

Noted, the poet Breeze was recognized as the first woman performer in this traditionally male-dominated field. She had not only published several books of poetry but also had made multiple recordings of her work.
