Football Coach Jim Hess’ Cause of Death at 85 After Latest Win

Unexpectedly, a former American football college coach and a scout for the Dallas Cowboys in the National Football League passed away. Coach Jim Hess’ cause of death has not been confirmed yet, but his death news was released on Sunday, October 3, 2021.

US day News doesn’t confirm or refuse any reason for his death, but coach Jim Hess’ death news came right after the Cowboys’ win. The legend passed away at the age of 85.

Hess was a native of Farmersville, Texas. He was graduated from Farmersville High School and later enrolled at Paris Junior College. He transferred to Southeastern Oklahoma State University after his sophomore season. He received his master’s degree in 1966 from the University of North Texas.

He coached at Stephen F. Austin State University between 1982-1988, where he compiled a 47-30-2 record, including a 10-3 mark in his final season. Jim led the school to five winning seasons, its first-ever conference title, and achieved the conference “Coach of the Year” honors. He left at the end of the 1988 season with a 47-30-2 record which was the highest winning percentage in school history at that time.

According to Wikipedia, Hess was named the athletic director in 1989. During his time with the school, he was instrumental in moving the program from the NAIA to NCAA Division II and into Division I-AA while helping to restore the athletic facilities.

Hess became the head coach at New Mexico State University in 1990. He led the program to its first winning season in 14 years with a 6-5 mark while becoming the “Big West Coach of the Year.”

Jim Hess was fired in 1996 after his second 1-10 season at the school. He was the 4th winningest coach in school history with a 22-55-0 record. He stopped with a career college coaching record of 134-108-5.

John P Erwin III MD FACC released Jim Hess’ death news on Twitter, writing: “I found out while celebrating the Cowboys win, that my @SFAFootball Head Coach who recruited me to @SFASU just passed away. He was a really good man who was the first coach at SFA to win a championship in 50 years. He convinced me to come be a part of that#RIPCoachHess.”

An online user wrote: “Hearing on a Sunday again that another former NMSU coach has passed. This time it’s former football coach Jim Hess. RIP.”
