What Led to Weatherman Jim Ramsey’s Death at 69?

We are deeply saddened to inform you of veteran Chicago weatherman Jim Ramsey’s death at the age of 69. According to reports he sadly passed away on April 8, 2022, but there his death cause has not been revealed at this time.

The sad news of Jim Ramsey’s death was shared on social media when WGN Weather Producer Bill Snyder wrote on Twitter: “Heartbreaking news has just arrived into our newsroom. Long-time WGN colleague, Jim Ramsey has passed away at 69 yrs old.”

He continued: “I had the pleasure of working with Jim for 20 years. He was a class act, and we shared many laughs/ stories over the years. RIP Jim.”

A graduate of the University of South Carolina, Jim began his career as a news anchor in 1975. Following stints in Colorado, Virginia, and North Carolina, Ramsey came to Chicago to take on a news and weather position at ABC-owned WLS-Channel 7.

After working at ABC 7 for three years and four years at WJLA, the ABC affiliate in Washington, D.C., Ramsey joined WGN in 1987.

Ramsey long served as WGN’s weekend weather forecaster and also principal backup for chief meteorologist Tom Skilling.

Jim Ramsey’s Death 4 Years After Retirement

The heartbreaking news of Jim Ramsey’s death has come just four years after his retirement in 2017. Ramsey who worked for more than 40 years in television news and weather was retired in December 2017.

It is unclear how the meteorologist died; however, the WGN outlet said they would reveal more details related to Jim Ramsey’s sudden death in an evening news segment.

WGN news director Jennifer Lyons shared Jim Ramsey’s retirement news through a statement. “Jim came to me several months ago and told me about his decision, but asked that I not say anything,” Lyons told staffers in an email.

She added: “Because in true Jim Ramsey fashion, he doesn’t want any pomp and circumstance. He is ready to spend more time with his wife and to have weekends to himself again.”

The heartbreaking news of Ramsey’s death rocked viewers on social media as they mourned the beloved stat. One viewer: “Sending my condolences to the WGN family as well as Jim Ramsay’s family and friends. Grew up watching him. RIP.”

“Jim had a terrific sense of humor, he was always up for a good @WGNMorningNews bit, and was willing to mock himself, like in this late 00’s ‘Rappin Ramsey’ bit,” WGN wrote on Twitter along with a picture of the 69-year-old.

Tahman Bradley reacted to the sad news and paid tribute to the late star on social media, writing: “This one stings. I loved this dude. He was a gentleman. Smart. Worldly. Funny. Oh, how I loved the twinkle in his eye when I would poke fun at him during a weather toss! RIP, my friend.”

“The @WGNNews family has lost a long-time colleague. Jim Ramsey said he was enjoying his time out of a suit when he visited WGN a year after retirement. Jim was always a pro. I learned a lot while working beside him & enjoyed talking college football & music of the 60s with him,” Mike Janssen said.

WGN-TV reporter Mike Lowe shared a photo of Jim and himself on Twitter and wrote: “We’re saddened to learn that Jim Ramsey has died. Jim was a mainstay of the powerhouse of the @WGNNews weather team for 30 years, and he had one of the best voices in all of broadcasting. He retired in 2017.”

Lourdes Duarte, the television journalist for WGN-TV, shared his tribute on her Twitter account, writing: ” I’m sad to share with you that Jim Ramsey – former WGN TV meteorologist has passed away.”

She continued: “You always made everyone feel so special Jim Ramsey…always positive, always funny, always a gentleman. I was lucky enough to work with you. #RIP Jim Ramsey.”
