Jo Mersas’s father Stephen came to fame as a member of the band Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, which was started by the Marley siblings. The group was well-known for its albums like Free Like Me, Joy and Blues, Spirit of Music, and more. Stephen has also produced albums for various artists like Fugees, Krayzie Bone, Capleton, and more.

Jo Mersa spent his early years in Jamaica before he moved to Florida. He studied studio engineering at Miami Dade College, according to a 2014 article by the Jamaica Observer.
