Unrevealed Story of Philosopher Joseph Raz’s Sudden Death

There is no official report that announced Joseph Raz’s death. We heard this terrible news from multiple tweets that says he passed away on May 2, 2022, without mentioning the cause.

He was born on March 21, 1939, in Mandatory Palestine. He graduated from Hebrew University and he attended a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford with the funds that his previous university, Hebrew provided him.

There is no official report that announced Joseph Raz's death.

In Israel, before a conference, he met Hart who encouraged him to go to Oxford University. In 1967 Raz completed his Doctor of Philosophy.

He returned to his old university, Hebrew, as a lecturer in the Faculty of Law and Department of Philosophy. He got promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1971. A year after that he became a Professor of Philosophy of Law. From 2006 to 2009 he was announced as Research Professor at the University of Oxford. Since 2002, he was been a professor at the University of Columbia.

In the last years, Raz retired from Oxford and was currently also a research professor of law at King’s College London.

Philosopher Joseph Raz’s Rumor Death

Joseph Raz, the political philosopher, and professor at the University of Oxford passed away at the age of 83 peacefully at Charing Cross Hospital in his sleep.

He was one of the last remaining giants of jurisprudence and philosophy

”Joseph Raz, the renowned political philosopher whose views I defended in my last essay, died this morning. I had a weird feeling. He feels a strange epistemic connection with the philosophers he engages with human ideas. We’ll remember him for his Morality of Freedom”

A fan said that she had hoped to talk to Joseph Raz. she wanted to ask him a question about his view of legitimate authority in relation to a book that she was working on. She also mentioned that Raz’s brilliance will continue to inspire through his work. But she is very sad that the fun of talking to him is now lost.

The prizes that he achieved during his life are:

  • Honorary Doctorates by the Catholic University of Brussels
  • The International Prize for Legal Research ‘Hector Fix-Zamudio’ from the National Autonomous University of Mexico
  • Vice-Presidency Award from the Law Society of University College Dublin
  • The prestigious Tang Prize in Rule of Law from Taiwan

Two current Professors in Jurisprudence at Oxford, Leslie Green and Timothy Endicott are Raz’s students and the former professor of Jurisprudence John Gardner is too and they became important legal and moral philosophers.
