Born on February 26, 1931, the British stage and television character actress gained fame for her roles in British television sitcoms, such as:

  • Edna Hawkins aka “Mrs. H” in Shelley;
  • Elizabeth “Liz” Warden,
  • The long-suffering next-door neighbor of Hyacinth Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances (1990–1995)
  • Miss Davenport in Last of the Summer Wine (2003–2010)

Tewson attracted much attention to herself for her role as Elizabeth Warden, neighbor and reluctant confidant of social wannabe Hyacinth Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances.

The beloved comedy actress was shown in nearly every episode for the 5 series run, providing an often rattled but pragmatic counter to the scattered and clueless “Mrs. Bucket”.

Also, Josephine was featured alongside John Inman in Odd Man Out (1977), which is considered to be an unsuccessful sitcom. In the movie, they played half-brother/half-sister roles. Despite denying the idea in several interviews, she was rumored to be Inman’s cousin.

She also appeared in the 1984 children’s film Gabrielle and the Doodleman as the characters Mrs. Briggs (Gabrielle’s father’s housekeeper) and the Fairy Godmother.

As Miss Davenport in Last of the Summer Wine, She appeared semi-regularly from 2003 to 2010. It is a series written by Roy Clarke. Noted, Clarke has written Keeping Up Appearances as well.

Tewson also appeared in:

  • two episodes of the documentary series Comedy Connections, talking about her work in Keeping Up Appearances (2004)
  • opposite The Two Ronnies (2005).
  • Playing the role of Iris in the radio drama Leaves in Autumn in 2009, written by Susan Casanove, and produced by the Wireless Theatre Company

A tweet from Diamon Management revealed that the beloved comedy actress has passed away without clarifying Josephine Tewson’s cause of death. It was tweeted that Josephine passed away peacefully last night at Denville Hall at the Age of 91.

Tewson studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art from which she graduated in 1952 after grammar school. She was married twice. The first was to actor Leonard Rossiter. from whom he later divorced in 1961.

In the early 1970s, she got married to Henry Newman; but sadly did not last long as he passed away in 1980. She had no children.

A fan expressed: “Josephine Tewson has passed at 91. A familiar and much-loved TV face for 6 decades, mostly in comedy: often with Ronnie Barker, including co-starring with him in Clarence, with Dick Emery; and in continuing roles in Keeping Up Appearances, Last of the Summer Wine, Shelley: RIP”

Johnny Seifert tribute: “It’s so sad that we have lost so many of the Keeping Up Appearance cast. It was such a brilliant best of British comedy and Josephine played her part brilliantly to allow Patricia to get the punchline laughs in their scenes. #JosephineTewson
