Heartbreaking news of Ouellet’s passing sent shockwaves around Quebec. “My condolences to the family and loved ones of Karim Ouellet, a young artist who brought a new style to Quebec music,” Premier François Legault wrote.

Karim Ouellet was born on December 8, 1984, in Dakar, Senegal. He was adopted by Canadian diplomats at the age of one and lived in France, Rwanda, and Tunisia until his family returned to live in Quebec when he was 15.

Karim released his debut album, Plume, in 2011 and was the second-place finisher in that year’s Francouvertes competition.

The artist followed up with Fox in November 2012. In 2013, he garnered three nominations at the Félix Awards, including Best Male Singer, Best Single for “L’Amour,” and Pop Album of the Year.

While Quellet’s music follows a folk-pop style with some reggae and African music influences, he collaborated with several hip hop groups, including CEA and Movèzerbe.

His third album, Trente, was released in March 2016. In 2018, Karim served as the French language spokesman for Black History Month in Canada.

His sister Sarahmée is a rapper who released her third album, Poupée russe, last year.
