Prime Minister of Malta, Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici Passed Away

With the most profound sorrow, we have to inform you that Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici passed away on November 5, 2022, at the age of 89. He was the prime minister of Malta from 1984 to 1987. May he rest in peace.

During his career, Bonnici presided over one of Malta’s most turbulent periods in history, taking over the reins of a divided country from Dom Mintoff, and seeing through controversial reforms in education that resulted in the infamous Church school protests and boycotts.

A lot of things led to clashes with the forces of law loyal to the State, including the radicalization of PN supporters at the time and the association of criminal elements with particular Labour ministers. Also, violence was visited upon PN supporters by Labour supporters and at the time, Mifsud Bonnici was unable to quell the violence.

On November 5, 2022, we lost the prime minister of Malta. Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici passed away at the age of 89. RIP.

Karmenu was the son of Lorenzo Mifsud Bonnici and Catherine Buttigieg, who grew up in a family strongly anchored in the Nationalist Party who his brother Antoine was a Nationalist MP and later parliamentary secretary.

Despite his brother, his cousin was Ugo Mifsud Bonnici and son of the PN grandee Carmelo ‘il-Gross’ Mifsud Bonnici, who would later become a minister and President of Malta.

He never got married and had no child and in his last years and before his health problems, Bonnici decided to practice law in 1954, he studied at the Lyceum and graduated in law at the University of Malta, and later in his career, Bonnici lectured in Industrial and Fiscal Law at the University of Malta.

He was considered an official of a number of lay organizations connected to the Church which included the Catholic Social Guild and the Young Christian Workers Movement and supported the “diocesan junta” of Church organizations opposing Dom Mintoff and Labour in the 1960s.

Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici Passed Away

It has been reported that there will be no state funeral for former Prime Minister Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici. Although, the government said that out of respect for Mifsud Bonnici’s years of duty, Prime Minister Robert Abela suggested to them that a state funeral is organized for the former PM.

They added: “The Government reiterates its condolences to the Mifsud Bonnici family and salutes the former Prime Minister’s memory for the work he has done in aid of Malta.”
