Hays was born on July 26, 1933, in Princeton, Illinois on July 26, 1933. After some years her family decided to move and she grew up in Joliet. Even from the early stages, she showed very promising talents for acting.

She firstly married Sidney Steinberg in 1957 and they had one daughter together whose name was Sherri. After some years her second marriage occurred and she got married to actor Glenn Ford in 1966.
