Fat Friends Writer Kay Mellor Left World Aged 71

The actor and screenwriter wrote a string of hit shows during her professional career, including Band Of Gold and Fat Friends, helping to launch the careers of Samantha Morton and James Corden, to name but a few.
She began her career writing plays, worked on the British soap opera Coronation Street, and also created the award-winning children’s drama Children’s Ward.
Leeds-born Mellor went on to pen the critically acclaimed crime drama Band Of Gold. Her Bafta-nominated series Fat Friends brought together Gavin and Stacey stars Alison Steadman and Corden Jones.
Kay wrote BBC One’s women’s football series Playing The Field and Girlfriends, starring Miranda Richardson, Phyllis Logan, and Zoe Wanamaker on ITV.
The writer received an OBE in 2010. Mellor and her husband Anthony tied the knot in 1968 and share two daughters, actor Gaynor Faye, and television producer Yvonne Francas.
In her parallel career as a television actress, she starred in her own adaptation of 1997’s Jane Eyre and in other series and films such as A Good Thief, the comedy-drama Stan the Man, and Gifted.
On stage, she acted in Three Girls in Blue and also wrote and appeared in the one-woman show Queen at the West Yorkshire Playhouse.
In 2000, Mellor was the subject of This Is Your Life when she was surprised by English television newsreader and host Michael Aspel. In 2017, Kay also appeared on the BBC’s Desert Island Discs.
In July 2006, Kay’s The Chase aired on BBC One. Mellor wrote and directed the two-part drama A Passionate Woman which was broadcast on BBC One in April 2010. This play was inspired by her parents’ marriage.
She was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 2009 Birthday Honours and, Mellor was awarded the Writers Guild Award for Outstanding Contribution to Writing in 2014.
The actress was made a Fellow of the Royal Television Society In 2016 and she was awarded Broadcast’s Special Recognition Award in February 2020.

Kay Mellor’s Cause of Sudden Death is Untold
Kay Mellor’s cause of death has not been announced till May 17, 2022. According to the reports, Fat Friends and The Syndicate writer passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2022.
Outside of television, Kay wrote screenplays for feature films such as Girls’ Night starring Brenda Blethyn, Kris Kristofferson, and Julie Walters which won the Audience Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 1998.
Mellor wrote and directed the feature film Fanny and Elvis in 1999, starring Ray Winstone which won the Audience Prize at the Dinard British Film Festival. She also wrote and directed Some Kind of Life which was BAFTA nominated and also won the Prix Niki Award.
In 2017, Kay turned Fat Friends into a stage musical with Grammy-nominated English composer and record producer Nick Lloyd Webber writing the music. Fat Friends The Musical toured the United Kingdom in 2018.
The talented writer subsequently adapted Band of Gold, which toured the United Kingdom from 2019 until the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sir Lenny Henry, who starred in series three of the lottery drama The Syndicate, wrote on Twitter that he was saddened to hear that Kay Mellor has passed away. He also added that he was lucky to work with her on the Syndicate and found Kay to be incredibly creative, funny, and instinctive.
Henry also said that Mellor “knew what she wanted and knew how to get the best from us as actors. She will be missed. Condolences to her family.”
He noted that Mellor always had a warming smile on offer with open arms. Miller Sent all of his love to Gaynor Faye and the rest of the family during this difficult time.
Corrie‘s Antony Cotton also expressed his sadness and paid touching tributes to the late writer. He said that he is totally shocked to hear that Mellor has passed away. Cotton also added that Kay was a real trailblazer for women in this industry.
