The tragic news of the James Madison University softball star’s death has been announced on April 26, 2022, and many fans are searching for Lauren Bernett’s cause of death at the young age of 20.
JMU officials announced the heartbreaking news of Lauren Bernett on Tuesday morning, saying the tragedy was “devastating.” The team did not reveal her cause of death.
“Our hearts are aching, hearing the news of the loss of one of our student-athletes. We are a tight family. We are grateful that Lauren has been part of our JMU Athletics community and will always consider her to be a Duke. We will miss her dearly,” officials said.
Bernett, a sophomore, was a star catcher for the Dukes. She was just named Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week on April 25.
In a game against College of Charleston on April 16, Lauren recorded three hits and seven RBIs — a JMU record. In a series against Drexel on April 23, the young player logged hits in seven of her nine at-bats.
On Monday, the CAA handed her the Player of the Week award for her great performance. Bernett was also a key contributor to the James Madison squad that made a deep run in the Women’s College World Series in 2021.

JMU President Jonathan Alger and Athletics Director Jeff Bourne shared a statement and confirmed the sad news. “Our thoughts are with her family; her coaches, teammates and friends; the rest of our department staff and student-athletes; and the entire JMU community. JMU Nation is a close community, and we grieve together,” Alger wrote.
After the heartbreaking news of Lauren Bernett’s death was shared on social media, her friends and fans started sending condolence to her family and paying a touching tribute to the late player.
TJ Eck tweeted: “Lauren Bernett will always be remembered by #JMUNation for her role on the @JMUSoftball WCWS team. She was there, alongside Odicci Alexander and the rest of the Dukes, during some of their biggest moments in OKC last June. Just a tragic loss.”
Bob Turner wrote: “Absolutely heart breaking to see this news this morning. Thoughts and prayers are with the family of Lauren Bernett, as well as the @JMUSoftball family.”
One of her friends shared a photo of Lauren on her Twitter account and wrote: “This is Lauren Bernett—24 hrs ago she was named “Player of Week” with a great performance this weekend! Today we learn she has passed away.
“Check on your teammates/ student-athletes. Mental health is a big issue& I hope this family knows I have them in my thoughts and prayers,” she added.
“22 hours ago, Lauren Bernett was named the CAA softball Player of the Week. An hour ago, it was announced that she had passed away. My condolences to the @JMUSoftball program, the Bernett family and all Lauren’s teammates and friends. A terrible reminder of life’s unfairness,” Alex Riley wrote.
Lauren is survived by her parents, Scott and Kim, and her two brothers and two sisters. The team has canceled its Wednesday doubleheader against Longwood in the wake of Lauren’s passing.
