James Bond Songwriter Leslie Bricusse’s Cause of Death: Still Private

Oscar-winning composer and lyricist Leslie Bricusse’s cause of death has been kept in private after he passed away on Tuesday (October 19, 2021) at the age of 90. May he rest in power.

The heartbreaking death news of the man behind the lyrics of You Only Live Twice was announced by his friend Joan Collins, who called Leslie “one of the giant songwriters of our time.”

His son, Adam Bricusse, confirmed the passing of his father, who enchanted children with his musical confections for “Doctor Dolittle” and “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory,” seduced their parents with the crooner standards “What Kind of Fool Am I?” and “Who Can I Turn To?” and helped write the title song to the James Bond film “Goldfinger.”

Leslie Bricusse was a phenomenal songwriter. His work with Anthony Newley was magic. Gave us the Willy Wonka score and so many other great songs. The Nina Simone classic, “Feeling Good”? I only recently realized he wrote that too! Holy shit! Rest In Peace.

“The writer of Candyman, Goldfinger amongst so many other hits, and my great friend Leslie Bricusse has sadly died today,” Collins posted on social media. She then came to add, “He and his beautiful Evie have been in my life for over 50 years. I will miss him terribly, as will his many friends.”

He was born in London and parlayed his advanced theatrical success at Cambridge into an early career writing sketches and music for stage and small screen. The legend’s most famous partnership kicked off in 1959 with beloved actor-singer Anthony Newley, a one-time child star he described as a spiritual “soul mate.”
