Cancer was reported as Louise Gluck’s cause of death by Jonathan Galassi, her longtime editor at Farrar, Straus & Giroux on October 13, 2023.
Jonathan Galassi said in a statement: “Louise Gluck’s poetry gives voice to our untrusting but unstillable need for knowledge and connection in an often unreliable world. Her work is immortal.”
Louise Elisabeth Gluck was born on April 22, 1943, in New York City, U.S. She began to suffer from anorexia nervosa while in high school and later overcame the illness.
Louise attended Sarah Lawrence College and Columbia University but didn’t obtain a degree. In addition to being an author, Gluck taught poetry at several academic institutions.
The author won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Literature, whose judges praised “her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal”.
Gluck’s other awards include the Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award, National Humanities Medal, National Book Critics Circle Award, and Bollingen Prize.
From 2003 to 2004, Gluck was the Poet Laureate of the United States. She is frequently described as an autobiographical poet.
Her notable work is well-known for its emotional intensity and for drawing on mythology or nature imagery to meditate on personal experiences and modern life.
Gluck’s poems have illuminated aspects of trauma, desire, and nature. In doing so, they have become known for frank expressions of sadness and aloneness.

According to her publisher, the US poet and Pulitzer Prize-winner Louise Gluck’s cause of death is cancer. He passed away at her home in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Glück also worked as the Frederick Iseman Professor in the Practice of Poetry at Yale University and as a professor of English at Stanford University.
Louise split her time between Cambridge, Massachusetts; Montpelier, Vermont; and Berkeley, California.
After the sad news of Louise Gluck’s death was revealed, her friends and fans quickly flooded social media with tribute messages. Many fans also took to Twitter to pay tributes to her.
“Louise Glück was and will always be a literary giant who changed a language and a world. Rest in everything, dear poet,” Joseph Fasano said.
Zeeshan Pathan wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Writing is a kind of revenge against circumstance too: bad luck, loss, pain. If you make something out of it, then you’ve no longer been bested by these events.”
Brenda Hillman tweeted: “Louise Glück was a great poet, a great human being, a friend for 40+ years. In this day of unspeakable sudden loss, so much comes to mind: she remained humble about writing, suffering, living. Great poets are eternal whether they approve of eternity or not.”
