The former goalkeeper of the national team and Catholic University sadly passed away at the age of 63. According to reports, his disease was diagnosed in October.
Marco Cornez whose full name was Marco Antonio Cornez Bravo was born on October 15, 1957. Cornez was is the biological father of Nicolás Córdova.
The former player played for Club Deportivo Palestino, Everton de Viña del Mar, Club de Deportes Antofagasta, Municipal Iquique, and Universidad Católica, scoring 24 goals between 1975 and 1998.
Marco was an unused reserve goalkeeper for Chile at the 1982 FIFA World Cup. Cornez’s international career lasted from 1982 to 1995, and during this time he won 20 caps. Cornez discovered Christiane Endler.
Along with UC, Cornez won two national titles and a Republic Cup. He was also part of the National Team squad that played in the 1982 World Cup in Spain.

Marco Cornez’s Death Cause Reported as Cancer
Marco Cornez’s death cause was revealed as intense stage IV stomach cancer with spinal metastases. The heartbreaking news was shared on social media on May 21 and shocked his fans.
One of his most important traits for which he will continue to be remembered is his ability to score as a goalkeeper, converting 24 goals in his professional career. That led Marco to become one of the highest-scoring goalkeepers of all time.
In October, when Cornez was diagnosed with cancer that claimed his life, he thanked his colleagues for their support at the time. He said: “A lot of people were involved, but I wanted to highlight important people, who made weight, the contribution, like René Valenzuela, a lifelong friend, or Arica Hurtado.”
He continued: “We are the leaders who led the Catholic people to these wonderful changes. I want to graph to them the unconditional support of these schools. And I also want to highlight the core support of Colo-Colo residents.”
“With Lizardo Garrido, Raúl Ormeño, Roberto Rojas, Chupete Hormazábal, Fernando Astengo. I have been called. They tell me that we are not enemies, but friends. As the heartbreaking news started to spread, many friends and fans took to social media to pay tribute to the late player.
Everton in Chile’s official Twitter account confirmed the sad news and wrote that the former @evertonsadp and @LaRoja Goalkeeper sadly passed away after a battle with stomach cancer. They sent their thoughts and prays to all his family and friends.
“Special game for her, Marco Cornez, Goalkeeping Coach of La Roja Femenina when she was 16 years (and play as a Striker) just die this morning, he convinced Tiane of play as a Goalkeeper,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
Radio de la Cato’s Twitter account said that they regret the passing of one of the best goalkeepers in the history of Chilean football, and of one of the most beloved of their club: Marco Cornez. They added: “Our condolences to his family and close ones. Rest in peace, Marco.”
Eugenio Figueroa sent condolences to his family, friends, and followers. He said that his heart tightens with the death of Marco Antonio Cornez. He called Cornez a tremendous goalkeeper, multi-champion, World Cup player, and a benchmark in his position. Figueroa added that Marco was also, a great person.
Elias Figueroa said that Marco Cornez was a great goalkeeper and a tremendous person and his death hurt his fans. He added that Marco’s image of a happy man, excellent companion, and father of a family will remain forever.
“RIP Marco Antonio Cornez. The first goalkeeper I saw at UC, an important part of the group of players that made me a soccer fan,” Manoel de Tezanos Pinto wrote on Twitter.
