‘Breaking Bad’ Star Mark Margolis’ Cause of Death: Heart Illness

The veteran actor, well known for starring as a former drug kingpin Hector “Tio” Salamanca on Breaking Bad, Mark Margolis’ cause of death is still unknown since he passed away on August 3, 2023, at the age of 83.

The heartbreaking news of Margolis’ passing was confirmed and also first announced by his son, Morgan Margolis, who shared that his father took his last breath at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York “following a short illness.”

Born into a Jewish family in Philadelphia on Nov. 26, 1939, he raised by his mother, Fanya, who was a decorator and worked for a wallpaper company and did lots of painting, and his father, Isidore, who was a factory worker.

He took his first acting class when he was only 14, and after a year at Temple University, he relocated to New York and studied drama with Adler at The Actors Studio (he would become a lifetime member). “My first impression of her was, ‘If God is a woman, this is him,’” he told Eric Broadbent in an Inside the Gilliverse interview in 2020. “She was larger than life. Everything that I know [about acting] came from Stella.”

Mark was born in Philadelphia on November 26, 1939; he had a career in Hollywood that spanned years and including films like:

• Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
• He additionally played in nearly all of Darren Aronofsky’s films, including Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, and Black Swan.

Also, Margolis appeared on scores of TV shows, with recurring roles on The Equalizer, Quantum Leap, and HBO’s Oz, where he starred as Antonio Nappa, an inmate infected with HIV. Additionally, he played Dr. Nel Apgar on Star Trek: The Next Generation, a paranoid scientist with a murderous streak.

“He was one of a kind,” Robert Kolker, Margolis’ longtime manager, shared in a statement, adding, “We won’t see his likes again. He was a treasured client and a lifelong friend. I was lucky to know him.”
