Secret of Theatre Legend Martha Henry’s Cause of Death

Share

It seems there are some untold stories behind Canadian theatre giant and Stratford Festival mainstay Martha Henry’s cause of death after she breathed her last on Thursday (October 21, 2021) at the age of 83. May the angel rest in heaven.

The heartbreaking news was first confirmed by the festival in an email, announcing that she passed away “in her Stratford, Ont., home just after midnight, surrounded by her family. It was just 12 days after she gave her final performance in Edward Albee’s Three Tall Women at the festival.”

Artistic director Antoni Cimolino also wrote in a news statement, “Our hearts are shattered.”

His statement added, “The name Martha Henry is synonymous with artistry, intelligence, and beauty. As an actor, her performances became the stuff of legend… Her sense of responsibility to the theatre was so profound that it enabled her to endure pain and face down her terminal disease to complete an astoundingly truthful performance as a dying woman in Three Tall Woman. Her life became art.”

As we cited before, Martha lost her life just 12 days after her last show in Edward Albee’s Three Tall Women, directed by her close friend and colleague Diana Leblanc. In her last role, she starred a dying woman considering a life’s worth of memories and the happiness, gratification, guilt, and regret that comes with them.

Cancer Became Martha Henry’s Cause of Death

Martha Henry’s cause of death has been reported as cancer, while she did not open up about her recent health problem, so the death news shocked many.

Henry was diagnosed with cancer not long before the production, first slated for the 2020 season, was dropped because of the pandemic, Festival officials announced. She reportedly came back after treatment to have the role this past season, first by a walker and then, after about a month into the run, completing her living in a wheelchair.
