Many believed that Michael Sharpe’s cause of death probably relates to his last hospitalization after he passed away today (April 20) at the age of 65 in hospital. RIP.
Veteran journalist Michael Sharp, the managing director of the cable station jamaica news network owned by the RJR communication group, was hospitalized in a critical condition weeks ago.
His family had published a statement at that time, announcing Sharpe has thanked his friends and well-wishers for their kindness and encouragement as he continues to recover. “He and his family ask that you keep him in your thoughts and prayers,” the statement added.
Sharpe was the news operations manager at the Jamaica News Network, a member of The RJRGLEANER Communications Group, of which The Gleaner is a part.

General Manager of Broadcast Services at the RJRGLEANER Communications Claire Grant confirmed the heartbreaking news, saying, “It is with deep regret that TVJ, JNN, the RJRGLEANER Communications Group announces that our colleague, friend veteran broadcaster, newsman Michael Sharpe died this morning. Condolences to his family and friends. Peace Michael. Peace,” Grant tweeted.

Michael Sharpe’s Illness
According to reports, Sharpe had been battling illness for some time. He underwent heart surgery in 2020 and was hospitalized last month and while he was reported to be recovering but sadly passed away.
Journalist Michael Sharpe was admitted to the university hospital of west India after reportedly having an adverse reaction to a COVID-19 vaccine weeks ago. Sharp has made sterling contributions to the local media landscape as a veteran journalist, broadcaster, and educator.
Michael who was a successful prime-time draw on TVJ news for more than a decade has a journalism career spanning radio cable TV and the internet a trailblazing figure. The beloved sharp has in jamaica’s shifting media landscape been a constant for over 40 years and has taught and mentored many of jamaica’s new staff of journalists and investigative journalists.
He is well-known for asking probing questions and demanding answers even when the truth is uncomfortable.

For almost 40 years Michael Sharpe dedicated himself to the craft of journalism and keeping Jamaica informed. Michael was fearless and sharp in his coverage and commentary.
He added, “I offer my condolences to his family, friends and wider journalism fraternity as we remember his unwavering service to media and Jamaica.”
Michael entered the RJRGLEANER Group in 1983, was famous as the news anchor for Television Jamaica’s (TVJ) Prime Time News, alongside Dorraine Samuels, who passed away of cancer in 2019.

It has been reported for months Mr. Sharpe has been battling a lengthy illness and underwent heart surgery in 2020. I have not read or heard from any credible news outlets or sources that it was due to reaction from the vaccine. Why not write what was reported? Why spread a rumor? If it comes out that that was the case, then by all means publish it. We have enough tragedies to deal with, fear mongering doesn’t help.
You are right. But we never said he died of the COVID vaccine. We only mentioned that he was recently hospitalized due to a reaction to the vaccine.
In the last update, his illness was also mentioned.

It is unfortunate and indeed regrettable that the passing of this GIANT of a man, so probing and fair in his journalistic role; is shrouded in secrecy. This will further heighten the curiosity of people and ultimately fuel VACCINE HESITANCY. Is this what he would have wanted?

He will be immortal in history, and although he is dead, he is still alive in the minds.
