KY Basketball Player Mike Pratt’s Death After Battling Cancer
With a heavy heart, we have to announce that unfortunately, Former Kentucky basketball Hall of Famer and radio analyst, Mike Pratt’s death was announced late Thursday night after a battle with cancer at the age of 73.
Pratt had a great influence during his career journey which included playing, coaching, and working as a radio color commentator. Also, he provided commentary on radio broadcasts of UK games and had spent the last 20 years offering commentary on the radio broadcasts of the men’s games.
From 1966 to 1970, Pratt played for Kentucky. He was a two-time first-team All-SEC selection. As a senior, Pratt was named a Converse second-team All-American after averaging 19.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.
Pratt was a member of the University of Kentucky’s Athletics Hall of Fame. He finished his career in Kentucky basketball Hall with 1,359 points and 718 rebounds.
After playing basketball, Pratt went on to become an assistant coach for Lee Rose at UNC-Charlotte. He helped to lead the 49ers to 1977 Final Four. After Rose departed to become the head coach at Purdue, Pratt remained with UNCC as head coach for four seasons where he had a 56-52 record.
In 2001, he decided to become the radio color analyst alongside the Voice of the Wildcats, Tom Leach. He had this career through the end of the 2021-’22 season. After the regular season of his senior year, Pratt helped lead the Wildcats to:
- Three SEC Championships
- Two Elite Eight appearances
- A number one ranking
Jimmy Dan Conner made a massive change in Pratt’s life. He arrived in the UK as a freshman when he was 16 years old, two years after Pratt’s college career ended. He adored Pratt and said that he learned as much about basketball and how it should be played from Mike Casey and Dan Issel but especially from Pratt.
Conner added: ”He also was a model for treating people on and off the court that I still try to follow to this day. I give credit for what I achieved in life to a great degree to my mentor, Mike Pratt.”

Fans Mourn Over Mike Pratt’s Death
In 2019, he was diagnosed with colon cancer. Treatments caused him to miss Kentucky games at Georgia and Auburn in January of that year and after almost three years it sadly became the reason for Mike Pratt’s death. Funeral arrangements are still pending.

Matt Jones who is a Host of KSR and an NFL Preview show on ESPN Radio shared his sadness and said: ”It’s a sad day in Big Blue Nation as Mike Pratt has passed away. Mike had as much to Kentucky Athletics as anyone. He was a great player, and announcer and worked with the school behind the scenes in every imaginable way. He loved the University as much as anyone”.
