Williams was reportedly working at a construction site at the time of his passing.
The former Syracuse receiver was severely injured in a worksite incident in which a steel beam fell on his head, paralyzing him in his right arm and from the waist down.
On September 1, 2023, Williams was hospitalized after experiencing breathing problems and losing consciousness. On September 5, it was announced Mike had died at the age of 36.

Mike Williams was born on May 18, 1987, in Buffalo, New York, U.S. He was a former football player who was first drafted into the NFL by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2010.
He attended Riverside Institute of Technology. As a senior, Williams had 970 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns on offense, 35 tackles, and two interceptions on defense.
The talented player was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fourth round in the 2010 NFL Draft. Mike was signed to a four-year contract on June 4, 2010.
On September 12, 2010, Williams made his NFL debut against the Cleveland Browns.
On July 24, 2013, it was reported that Mike had agreed to a new six-year, $40.25 million contract with the Buccaneers that would have kept him in Tampa Bay through the 2018 season.
A GoFundMe page set up by his father Wendell Muhammad, details the tragic events that led to the former NFL player’s death. Williams revealed Mike lost consciousness from the injuries suffered on Friday.
“I come in peace and prayer and I’m seeking support to help me to help my first born son. I am the father of Mike Williams, former NFL player.
“My son played in the NFL from 2010 to 2014 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and his hometown team, the Buffalo Bills. Mike Williams recently had a major accident at work. A steal beam fell on his head causing a massive head injury.
“As a result of this accident, there was swelling on his brain and swelling on his spinal cord that was ruptured. These injuries resulted in complete paralysis in his right arm as well as his lower body from the waist down.”
“On Friday, Sept 1, 2023, around 9pm Mike Williams passed out. According to doctors, he suffered from severe breathing problems and had to be rushed to ICU.
“This time the doctors found that his diaphragm was pressing on his lungs and subsequently caused complications with his breathing. They reported that his lungs were filled with water.
“The doctors were able to free the diaphragm from pressing on his lungs, removing the water and allowing him to breathe a little better.
“Sadly, my son Mike Williams never gained consciousness. He never woke up from the night of Sept 1, 2023.”

Mike Williams’s Cause of Death Confirmed by his Father
Mike Williams’s cause of death was revealed by his father who said Mike lost consciousness from the injuries suffered on Friday.
On October 28, the Bucs announced that they had placed Mike Williams on injured reserve, finishing his season and leaving the Buccaneers without one of their starting wideouts the rest of the way.
He battled a hamstring injury for several weeks and finished that season with 22 catches for 216 yards and two touchdowns.

On April 4, 2014, he was traded to the Buffalo Bills, his hometown team, just one season after signing a contract extension with the Buccaneers.
It was reported that Williams had asked the Bills for a trade on October 13, 2014. He was placed on the waived/injured list on December 8, 2014.
Williams went unclaimed during the waiver process and was placed on the Bills injured reserve list the next day.
He recovered from his calf injury and was released by the Bills on December 22, 2014.
On September 8, 2015, it was announced that Mike would be suspended for the first six weeks of the 2015 season. Williams spent the entire 2015 season as a free agent.
He signed with the Kansas City Chiefs On April 25, 2016. On August 25, 2016, he was released by the Chiefs.
On Tuesday, the ex-athlete reportedly passed away during an accident. According to Buffalo Bills beat reporter Jon Scott of Spectrum News, Williams “passed away following injuries suffered during an accident while working at a construction site.”
Fans took to social media to pay touching tribute to the fallen star on Tuesday night. “When Mike Williams had 11 touchdown catches as a rookie with the Bucs in 2010, it set the team’s single-season record,” one fan wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Mike Evans has topped that four times now, but in his time, Williams had accomplished things nobody had done in Tampa.”
Another user penned: “RIP Mike Williams. It was really special watching a Buffalo native represent his hometown team. I’ll never forget his first touchdown as a Bill. Heartbreaking…”
